Every truck that leaves a construction site, landfill, quarry, or recycling plant carries some of that site with it. Mud and debris on tyres and underbodies end up on public roads, where they create hazards, draw complaints, and can lead to fines or stop-work notices. Wheel washing, sometimes written as wheelwash, is the practical answer: vehicles pass through a washing system that removes the dirt before they leave. This guide explains how these systems work and what to look for, using the wheel washers made by Tecnoter Group, an Italian manufacturer of environmental and industrial equipment, as an example.

What a Wheel Wash System Does

A wheel wash cleans the wheels Wash and often the lower body of vehicles as they drive through. At its simplest, it is a set of high-pressure nozzles that spray as a vehicle passes. At a more advanced level, it is a complete system that also treats and recycles the wash water, so the site does not discharge dirty water or burn through fresh supply.

The main questions a buyer should ask are:

How contaminated are the vehicles, and how many pass through per hour?
Will the system be permanent, or move between sites?
How will the dirty water be handled?
What are the space, power, and installation requirements?
Does the site face extreme weather?

Why Closed-Loop Matters

The wash water carries mud, oils, and sometimes more serious contaminants. Letting it run off is rarely acceptable, and sending it away for disposal is costly. Tecnoter highlights closed-loop industrial washing as a core offer: a filtration and recycling system that eliminates discharge, reduces disposal costs, and supports environmental compliance. Rules differ by country and site, so check what applies to you, but the principle is sound. Treat the water, reuse it, and keep the site and the road clean.

Underground Wheel Washers: The ECO Series

Tecnoter's wheel washer range includes several series, such as ECO, CLBR, and E/EP, as well as wash bays. The ECO series is a good example of a system built for demanding conditions. It is an automatic closed-loop wheel washer for stationary underground installations, designed for intense traffic and heavily contaminated vehicles.

Each ECO installation consists of one or more ultra high-definition wash lines and a set of underground tanks for chemical-physical treatment and clarification of the wastewater. Details Tecnoter publishes for the series include:

Throughput: the page rates it for up to 160 vehicles per hour, with an average wash time of about 20 seconds
Operation: vehicles pass through at low speed without stopping, and the system starts automatically using wind-resistant sensors
Vehicles: cars, trucks, and wheeled industrial machines, with loads from 30 tonnes per axle
Dimensions: internal width of 3.5 to 5 metres and internal length of 4 to 12 metres, depending on the model
Wash flow: from 1,500 to 22,500 litres per minute, using 1 to 12 wash pumps
Construction: heavy hot-dip galvanized carbon steel frame
Modularity: lines, tanks, and accessories can be adapted or expanded as needs change

Because the system sits in the ground, vehicles drive straight through with a low ground profile. The trade-off is installation: it needs civil works, so it suits permanent or long-term sites better than short projects. The manufacturer's own ratings reflect this, scoring it low for transportability and ease of installation but at the top for contamination level and traffic flow.

Options for Difficult Conditions

The ECO series can be fitted with optional heating units, so it can operate in extreme or freezing weather. Optional accessories can help reduce asbestos, hydrocarbons, suspended solids, and other specific pollutants. Other listed options include an additional settling tank, polyelectrolyte dosing, a sludge dewatering system, an extra-fine self-cleaning filter, rotating and adjustable nozzles, underbody and side cleaning injectors, an arch system for sanitizing and bacteriological control, fluid heating, and a generator.

Remote Monitoring With TcConnect

Tecnoter's wheel washers can be monitored and managed remotely through its TcConnect platform. The company says users can manage rental, track productivity, and check operating parameters from a PC, tablet, or phone. For contractors who rent equipment or manage multiple sites, remote visibility can save site visits and help spot problems early.

Where Wheel Washing Is Used

Tecnoter lists these applications for its ECO series:

City and road construction sites
Landfills and storage sites
Recycling plants
Demolition and environmental remediation
Municipal services
Preventive disinfection and access control

The same logic applies to quarries, mines, agricultural processing, and any site where vehicles move between dirty ground and public roads.

About Tecnoter Group

Tecnoter says it has more than 40 years of experience, has installed over 500 systems, and serves more than 20 countries. The group is based in Milan, Italy. Its product range also includes hydraulic systems and industrial equipment, which suggests broader engineering capability than washing alone. These are the company's own figures, so ask for references from sites similar to yours.

Choosing a System

Before requesting quotes, gather the vehicle types and weights, the number of vehicles per hour, how dirty they get, the available space, your power and water supply, the climate, whether the system must be fixed or movable, and the local rules on wastewater. The more precisely you describe these, the better the supplier can size a system.

Getting Started

You can request a quote through Tecnoter's website, or contact the group directly at +39 02 9824.8180 or info@tecnotergroup.com. The quote form asks for the product of interest, company, address, and a note about your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a wheel wash? A system that cleans the wheels, and often the underbody, of vehicles leaving a site, so mud and debris do not reach public roads.

2. Is "wheelwash" the same as "wheel washing"? Yes. They are different spellings for the same equipment and process.

3. What does closed-loop mean? The wash water is treated and recycled instead of being discharged, which cuts fresh water use and disposal costs.

4. How many vehicles can the ECO series handle? Tecnoter rates it for up to 160 vehicles per hour, with an average wash time of about 20 seconds.

5. Can it work in freezing weather? Yes, optional heating units allow operation in extreme conditions.

6. Can I monitor the system remotely? Yes, through Tecnoter's TcConnect platform, which covers productivity, rental, and operating parameters.

7. Is an underground wheel washer suitable for a short project? It needs civil works, so it generally suits permanent or long-term sites. Ask about other series for temporary use.
