Installing an RECD for DG Set can be considered when an existing diesel generator requires additional emission-control measures or when applicable requirements call for a suitable retrofit emission-control device. The right time to install an RECD depends on the DG set's specifications, operating conditions, applicable regulations, and the technical suitability of the device.

What Is an RECD Installation?

RECD installation involves adding an emission-control device to the exhaust system of an existing diesel generator.

The device is normally integrated into the exhaust line so that exhaust gases pass through the emission-control system before being released.

When Should You Consider RECD Installation?

There are several situations in which an RECD may need to be considered.

1. When Applicable Requirements Call for Emission Control

If environmental regulations, consent conditions, project requirements, or local authority requirements apply to your DG set, you should check whether an RECD or another emission-control measure is required.

Requirements can depend on the DG set category, capacity, location, installation date, and applicable rules.

2. When Upgrading an Existing DG Set

An organization may want to improve the emission-control performance of an existing DG set without replacing the complete generator.

A retrofit solution may be considered if the DG set is technically compatible.

3. When Visible Smoke Is a Concern

Excessive visible smoke can indicate combustion or maintenance problems. An RECD may help control particulate emissions, but the underlying engine problem should also be investigated.

4. Before a Major Compliance or Environmental Review

If a DG installation is subject to environmental monitoring or compliance requirements, it can be useful to review the exhaust system and emission-control arrangements beforehand.

This allows sufficient time to identify compatibility, installation, and maintenance requirements.

What Should You Check Before Installation?

Before purchasing or installing an RECD, collect the DG set's technical information.

Important details include:

DG set capacity
Engine make and model
Exhaust flow
Exhaust temperature
Exhaust pipe dimensions
Operating load
Existing exhaust arrangement
Permitted back pressure
Available installation space

This information helps determine whether the selected device is appropriate.

Can You Install RECD on Any DG Set?

Not necessarily. Compatibility needs to be established before installation.

The RECD must be suitable for the engine and exhaust characteristics. Incorrect sizing or unsuitable installation can create excessive exhaust resistance or other operational issues.

What Happens After Installation?

After installation, the system should be inspected and commissioned according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

The installation may need checks such as:

Exhaust leakage inspection
Back-pressure verification
Temperature monitoring
Mounting inspection
Connection inspection
Emission-performance verification where applicable

Why Is Professional Installation Important?

An RECD is part of the DG set's exhaust system. Installation affects exhaust flow, pressure, temperature, safety, and overall performance.

Qualified technicians can help ensure that:

Connections are properly sealed.
The device is correctly supported.
Exhaust flow is maintained.
Back pressure remains within acceptable limits.
Maintenance access is available.

Conclusion

An RECD may be considered when an existing DG set requires additional emission control, when applicable requirements call for such a system, or when an organization wants to retrofit emission-control equipment to a compatible generator. Before installation, technical compatibility, exhaust conditions, back-pressure limits, and applicable requirements should be checked carefully.

FAQs

1. Can RECD be installed on an existing DG set?

Yes, retrofit devices are specifically designed for suitable existing DG sets.

2. Is RECD installation mandatory for every DG set?

Not necessarily. Requirements depend on the applicable regulations, DG set specifications, location, and other conditions.

3. What information is required before installation?

DG capacity, engine details, exhaust flow, temperature, pipe dimensions, and back-pressure limits are among the important details.

4. Can improper installation affect a DG set?

Yes. Incorrect installation can affect exhaust flow and create excessive back pressure.

5. Should the DG set be tested after RECD installation?

Appropriate inspection and testing should be carried out according to the manufacturer's recommendations and applicable requirements.
