The Cisco 300-640 exam, called DCAI for short, covers Implementing Cisco Data Center AI Infrastructure. It is a 90-minute exam for engineers who build and run the networks, servers, and storage behind AI workloads. It also counts toward CCNP Data Center as a concentration exam.

How Cisco Divides the 300-640 Exam Topics

Cisco categorizes its topics under 300-640 into four categories. AI Fundamental and Application and Operation and Troubleshooting carry 20% weight each. On the other hand, AI Infrastructure Component and Architecture and AI Infrastructure Deployment and Data Management carry 30% weight each.

As you can see from above, this is not a theoretical exam where you do not have to learn how everything fits and functions and how to maintain it. Begin by reading the complete list of the topics for the 300-640 exam and comparing it with Cisco’s blueprint.

Core AI Infrastructure Concepts to Learn First for the Cisco 300-640 Exam

Start with the basics. Learn about the types of artificial intelligence workload: training, inference, RAG, and generative AI. You should also be aware of the differences between cloud, hybrid, on-premises, and edge environments. Moreover, you have to be aware of the applications of various Cisco artificial intelligence solutions: AI PODs and Hyperfabric AI. Then, learn how to evaluate the design. It involves aligning the networking, compute, and storage choices with the workload needs.

Then comes hands-on setup. Studying congestion control methods like PFC and ECN along with RoCE and QoS will help improve network efficiency. Learn about the crucial UCS policies of Cisco and the role of Nexus Dashboard, APIC, Hyperfabric, and Intersight.

Last, learn operations. Be prepared to perform benchmarking tests, monitor using the Nexus Dashboard and Intersight, look for alerts and logs, and troubleshoot using system messages. Studying more than one Cisco exam? You can find other certification exams on the CertBoosters.

How to Prepare With 300-640 Exam Questions

Good preparation for the 300-640 exam begins with the exam topics provided by Cisco. Convert each of those topics into a question and answer that in your own words. Everything you fail to understand is what needs studying next. Cisco even mentions two useful courses for you: "AI Solutions on Cisco Infrastructure Essentials (DCAIE)" and "Operate and Troubleshoot AI Solutions on Cisco Infrastructure (DCAIAOT)". Should you have access to the lab facility, do it, since when you learn through practice, it becomes more understandable.

Once you are ready, you can take some of the 300-640 exam practice questions and use your first score as the baseline rather than the final one. The reason is that the questions will focus on the areas of evaluation, configuration, and troubleshooting and thus will involve the application of your concepts. Note every term that surprised you. Retake them a few days later and compare. Keep the clock in mind too, since the real exam runs for 90 minutes.

Where Does the 300-640 Exam Fit in Your CCNP Data Center Certification Journey?

For CCNP Data Center, you have to take two exams, including one core exam and one concentration exam of your choice. The 300-640 DCAI is one of the concentration options. This exam is the focus exam and is 350-601 DCCOR. If your career is heading towards an AI-ready network, compute, and storage, then 300-640 is the ideal exam for you. There are no official prerequisites, but Cisco indicates that most candidates will have three to five years of experience in deploying data center solutions.

Not sure which exams to pair together? Check the CCNP Data Center Certification career path to see how the core and concentration exams connect, and then decide which one you would add next.
