When I first started exploring Puri, I realised that the experience does not end around the Jagannath Temple and Puri Beach. There are several interesting places around the town that can make a trip feel more varied and memorable. As a travel blogger, I usually prefer choosing places based on the kind of experience I want rather than trying to cover every attraction in one day. So, if someone asks me about the Places Near Puri I would recommend to a first-time visitor, these are the ones I would consider first.

Konark Sun Temple – My First Choice

If I had to recommend just one nearby destination to someone visiting Puri for the first time, Konark would be high on my list. The Sun Temple has a completely different character from the temples in Puri. What I enjoyed most was taking time to look at the stone carvings and architectural details instead of simply arriving, taking photographs and leaving. The temple is also a good choice for travellers who enjoy history and architecture.

For a first Puri trip, I would keep enough time for Konark rather than treating it as a quick stop. The journey itself also gives you a chance to see more of the coastal side of Odisha.

Raghurajpur – For Art and Village Life

Raghurajpur is one of the places I would suggest to travellers who want something beyond temples and beaches. The village is known for its traditional artwork and crafts, and visiting it gives a more personal feel to the trip. I particularly like the idea of visiting places where you can see local artists working rather than only seeing finished products in shops. You can browse traditional paintings and handicrafts while learning a little about the skills passed down through generations. For me, Raghurajpur works well because it adds a cultural experience to a Puri trip without feeling like another typical sightseeing stop.

Pipili – A Short Stop for Local Crafts

Pipili is another place I would consider if I had some extra time. It is particularly known for its colourful appliqué work and handicrafts.

I would not necessarily plan an entire day around Pipili. Instead, I see it as a useful stop when travelling through the area. It is a good option if you enjoy shopping for locally made items or want to take home something connected with Odisha's traditional craft culture.

The experience is quite different from visiting a temple, which is why I think it can add variety to a first trip.

Chilika Lake – When I Want a Nature Break

Chilika Lake would be my choice when I want to slow down and spend some time around nature. It offers a very different experience from the religious and cultural attractions around Puri. However, I would not add Chilika automatically to every short Puri trip. The experience can depend on which part of the lake you visit and how much time you have. If I had a little more time, I would consider adding it instead of rushing through several smaller attractions. For travellers who enjoy boating, birds and open landscapes, Chilika can make a refreshing change from a busy sightseeing schedule.

Sakshi Gopal Temple – For a Quieter Temple Visit

Another place I would recommend is Sakshi Gopal Temple. If your interest in Odisha is connected with temples and local traditions, this can be a worthwhile addition. What I like about including a place such as Sakshi Gopal is that it gives the trip a slightly different pace. Instead of spending the entire day around the busiest parts of Puri, you can explore another important religious destination nearby.

I would especially consider it for travellers who enjoy visiting temples not only for photographs but also for the stories and traditions associated with them.

How I Would Choose These Places

I don’t think first-time visitors need to cover every nearby attraction. I would choose places based on your interests, available time, and the kind of experience you want. A relaxed trip with two or three carefully selected destinations can be much more enjoyable than rushing through several places in one day.

If you have limited time: I would prioritise Konark and Raghurajpur.
If you enjoy temples: Konark and Sakshi Gopal would be good choices.
If you like traditional crafts: Raghurajpur and Pipili would be more interesting.
If you prefer nature: I would give more time to Chilika Lake.
If you are travelling with family: Konark and Raghurajpur can provide two very different experiences without making the trip entirely temple-focused.

The biggest mistake, in my opinion, is trying to squeeze every nearby destination into one day. Travelling should leave some room to stop, explore and actually enjoy a place.

My Experience of Exploring Beyond Puri

One thing I have learned from travelling around Puri is that the surrounding destinations can change the way you experience the region. The temples tell one story, the villages show another side of Odisha, while places such as Chilika offer a completely different atmosphere.

That is why I would recommend choosing two or three places that genuinely interest you rather than following a long checklist. It makes the journey more comfortable and gives you time to appreciate each destination.

My Final Recommendation

For a first-time visitor, I would start with Konark because of its architecture and historical importance, then choose between Raghurajpur, Sakshi Gopal, Pipili or Chilika depending on your interests and available time. There are plenty of Places Near Puri worth exploring, but you don't have to see everything in one trip. From my experience, a relaxed plan usually makes the journey much more enjoyable.
