Diesel generator sets are an important part of India's power infrastructure. They provide electricity during grid interruptions and are also used in locations where regular grid power is unavailable or insufficient. Industries, hospitals, offices, commercial buildings, construction projects, educational institutions, and many other facilities depend on DG sets.

Retrofit Emission Control Device (RECD)At the same time, diesel combustion produces exhaust emissions. This makes emission management an important part of DG-set operation. A can be considered for suitable existing DG engines as one approach to managing exhaust emissions.

Why Do Diesel Generators Produce Emissions?

A diesel generator converts fuel energy into mechanical power through combustion. The engine then drives an alternator to produce electricity.

Combustion produces exhaust gases. The level of emissions depends on factors such as engine design, fuel quality, combustion condition, operating load, engine age, and maintenance.

A poorly maintained engine can produce abnormal smoke and emissions because of incomplete combustion or mechanical problems.

What Is an RECD?

A Retrofit Emission Control Device is an emission-control system designed to be fitted to an existing diesel generator engine.

The device is installed in the exhaust system and is intended to control targeted pollutants before the exhaust reaches the atmosphere.

The specific technology varies by product and application.

Why Is Retrofit Technology Useful?

Many organizations already have functioning DG sets. Replacing a generator involves equipment cost, electrical modifications, installation work, space requirements, and potential downtime.

Where technically and regulatorily appropriate, retrofit technology provides another option to evaluate.

However, retrofitment should not be assumed to be suitable for every generator.

How Does RECD Support Emission Management?

The RECD treats exhaust gases after they leave the engine and before they are discharged.

Its effectiveness depends on the specific device and the operating characteristics of the generator.

CPCB's RECD certification framework connects devices with specific engine families and technical characteristics.

This is why selecting the correct device is an important part of emission-control planning.

What Does CPCB Have to Do With DG Sets?

CPCB is responsible for important aspects of pollution control and environmental standards in India.

DG-set emission requirements can depend on the applicable standard, engine characteristics, capacity, manufacturing period, and other regulatory conditions.

Organizations should therefore determine which requirements apply to their specific generator.

Why Should DG Owners Check Certified RECD Information?

CPCB publishes information on certified RECD manufacturers and their applicable engine ranges. Its published list demonstrates that RECD applicability varies by power range and engine category.

This is useful for buyers because it emphasizes the importance of checking the exact device and application rather than purchasing an emission-control product based only on a general advertisement.

What Role Does Generator Maintenance Play?

RECD should work alongside proper DG-set maintenance.

Important maintenance areas include:

Fuel quality
Fuel filters
Air filters
Injectors
Engine oil
Cooling system
Turbocharger where applicable
Exhaust system
Battery
Engine tuning and performance

If the engine has a mechanical problem, that problem should be corrected.

For example, black smoke can be associated with incomplete combustion, excessive fueling, restricted air supply, injector issues, or other engine conditions. Installing an emission-control device should not replace diagnosis of the underlying engine problem.

What Should Businesses Consider Before Buying RECD?

Businesses should evaluate the following:

Technical compatibility: Does the device match the engine family and power range?

Certification: Is relevant certification or testing documentation available?

Installation: Can the device be installed without creating unacceptable exhaust-system conditions?

Maintenance: What maintenance does the RECD require?

Documentation: Can the supplier provide appropriate technical documents?

Support: Is installation and after-sales technical assistance available?

Is RECD a Replacement for a New DG Set?

Not automatically.

An existing generator may be suitable for retrofit in some circumstances, while in other cases replacement may need to be considered based on the generator's condition, age, operating requirements, and applicable regulations.

The correct decision should be based on technical and regulatory assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is RECD important for existing DG sets?

It can be an important emission-control option for suitable existing generators.

Does every DG set require the same RECD?

No. Device applicability can vary by engine family and power range.

Can RECD solve engine smoke problems?

Emission-control equipment should not be treated as a substitute for repairing engine faults.

Where can buyers check certified RECD information?

CPCB publishes certified RECD manufacturer information and applicability details.

Conclusion

RECD can play an important role in managing emissions from suitable existing DG sets in India. Its value depends on correct device selection, technical compatibility, installation quality, generator condition, maintenance, and compliance with applicable requirements.

Organizations should evaluate the complete situation rather than selecting an RECD solely on price or general marketing claims.
