Diesel generator sets are commonly used for backup and continuous power in industries, commercial buildings, hospitals, offices, construction sites, and other facilities. While DG sets provide reliable electricity, diesel combustion produces exhaust emissions that need to be properly managed.

A Retrofit Emission Control Device (RECD) is designed to help control targeted pollutants from existing diesel generator exhaust. It can be an important emission-control solution when a DG set requires additional emission-control equipment and replacement of the complete generator is not the preferred approach.

What Is RECD for a Diesel Generator?

RECD stands for Retrofit Emission Control Device. It is an emission-control system that can be integrated into the exhaust system of an existing diesel generator, subject to technical compatibility.

When the DG set operates, exhaust gases pass through the retrofit equipment. Depending on the technology used, the system can help reduce specific pollutants from the exhaust before the gases are released into the atmosphere.

The performance of an RECD depends on factors such as the technology, engine specifications, exhaust conditions, operating load, and maintenance.

Why Is RECD Important for DG Sets?

1. Helps Control Generator Emissions

One of the main reasons RECD is important is its role in controlling targeted pollutants from diesel generator exhaust. This can support better emission management at sites where DG sets operate regularly.

The exact pollutants controlled and the level of reduction depend on the specific RECD technology and application.

2. Supports Applicable Environmental Requirements

Diesel generator operators need to understand and follow the requirements applicable to their equipment and installation.

CPCB guidelines for RECD The can be an important reference when evaluating emission-control solutions. However, requirements can change and may depend on the DG-set category, capacity, installation, and other applicable conditions. Users should verify the latest requirements before selecting or installing an RECD.

3. Allows Existing DG Sets to Be Retrofitted

One major advantage of retrofit technology is that it can be considered for an existing generator.

Instead of automatically replacing the complete DG set, a technically suitable retrofit system may provide an additional emission-control option. The suitability of this approach depends on the condition and specifications of the generator and applicable requirements.

4. Supports Better Air-Emission Management

Regular operation of diesel generators can contribute to local air emissions. Using suitable emission-control technology can help facilities manage targeted exhaust pollutants more effectively.

RECD should be considered as part of a broader environmental and equipment-management approach.

How Does an RECD Device for Diesel Generator Work?

RECD device for diesel generatorAn is generally integrated into the exhaust system.

The basic process is:

The diesel engine burns fuel to generate power.
Combustion produces exhaust gases.
Exhaust gases travel through the exhaust piping.
The gases pass through the RECD system.
The selected technology processes targeted pollutants.
Treated exhaust gases exit through the exhaust outlet.

The exact working mechanism varies according to the type of emission-control technology used.

What Are the Benefits of RECD?

A suitable RECD can provide several practical benefits:

Helps control targeted diesel exhaust pollutants.
Provides an emission-control option for existing DG sets.
Supports environmental management at generator-operating sites.
Can help facilities address applicable emission-control requirements.
May reduce the need for immediate complete generator replacement in suitable applications.
Can be integrated into an existing exhaust arrangement when technically feasible.

The actual benefits depend on correct product selection, installation, operation, and maintenance.

Factors to Consider Before Installing RECD

Not every RECD is suitable for every diesel generator. A technical assessment should be completed before installation.

DG Set Capacity

The rated capacity of the generator is an important factor when selecting the appropriate emission-control system.

Engine Make and Model

Different engines can have different exhaust characteristics. Engine specifications should therefore be considered during RECD selection.

Exhaust Gas Flow

The retrofit system needs to be compatible with the expected exhaust flow of the generator.

Exhaust Temperature

Some technologies require suitable exhaust temperature conditions for effective operation.

Back Pressure

The RECD installation should be designed within appropriate engine exhaust back-pressure limits to avoid negatively affecting generator operation.

Operating Load and Hours

The average load, operating hours, and duty cycle of the DG set can influence the selection and performance of the emission-control system.

Does RECD Replace DG Set Maintenance?

No. RECD does not replace regular generator maintenance.

The DG set should continue to receive proper servicing, including inspection of the engine, fuel system, lubrication system, cooling system, filters, battery, and exhaust system.

The RECD itself should also be inspected and maintained according to the manufacturer's technical instructions.

A poorly maintained engine can produce abnormal emissions, and an emission-control device should not be treated as a substitute for correcting engine problems.

RECD and Compliance: What Should Users Check?

Before purchasing or installing an RECD, users should review:

Applicable CPCB and regulatory requirements
DG-set capacity and specifications
Engine make and model
Exhaust flow and temperature
Back-pressure requirements
Technical compatibility
Installation requirements
Product documentation
Applicable certifications or approvals, where required
Maintenance and inspection requirements

Keeping proper installation and maintenance documentation can also help with equipment management and compliance-related records.

Why Choose the Right RECD System?

Choosing the right system is important because an unsuitable device may not provide the expected emission-control performance and could affect exhaust-system operation.

A suitable solution should be selected based on the DG set's technical specifications rather than price alone. Professional technical assessment can help determine compatibility, installation requirements, and ongoing maintenance needs.

FAQs

What does RECD mean?

RECD means Retrofit Emission Control Device. It is designed to help control targeted pollutants from the exhaust of an existing diesel generator.

Why is RECD important for diesel generators?

RECD is important because it can help control targeted exhaust pollutants and support applicable emission-control and environmental-management requirements for suitable DG sets.

Can RECD be installed on an existing DG set?

Yes, retrofit systems are designed for existing equipment, provided the selected system is technically compatible and meets applicable requirements.

Is an RECD device suitable for every generator?

No. Selection depends on factors such as DG capacity, engine specifications, exhaust flow, temperature, back pressure, operating conditions, and applicable requirements.

Does an RECD eliminate all DG emissions?

No. An RECD is designed to control specific pollutants depending on its technology. It does not mean that all emissions from a diesel generator are eliminated.

How can RECD performance be maintained?

Correct installation, regular inspection, proper DG-set maintenance, and following the RECD manufacturer's maintenance instructions are important for continued operation.

Conclusion

RECD is an important emission-control option for suitable diesel generator sets because it can help manage targeted exhaust pollutants from existing equipment. A properly selected and installed system can support emission management while allowing an existing DG set to continue operating.
