Rajasthan is famous for its magnificent forts, royal palaces, colourful markets, and desert landscapes. Cities such as Jaipur, Udaipur, and Jodhpur attract travellers who want to experience the state's history and architectural beauty. However, beyond these popular destinations, smaller villages offer opportunities to discover traditional craftsmanship, regional customs, and everyday rural life.

One such place is Salawas, a village near Jodhpur known for its traditional handwoven durries and local cultural heritage. While most visitors focus on Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada, and the Blue City's historic streets, including Salawas in a travel itinerary can introduce them to a different side of Rajasthan.

For travellers interested in handicrafts, rural communities, and meaningful cultural experiences, Salawas is worth considering during a Jodhpur holiday.

1. Discover Rajasthan Beyond Its Famous Tourist Attractions

Most Jodhpur itineraries focus on historical landmarks, markets, and popular photography locations. Although these attractions are important, they represent only part of the region's cultural identity.

Villages around Jodhpur provide insight into traditions that continue outside the main tourist areas. Visitors can learn about local occupations, community practices, and crafts that have developed over generations.

Salawas offers an opportunity to explore these aspects of Rajasthan without planning an entirely separate holiday.

Instead of visiting only monuments, travellers can include experiences that introduce them to the region's living cultural traditions.

2. Explore the Traditional Durry-Weaving Heritage of Salawas

One of the main reasons to visit Salawas is its connection with traditional durry weaving.

Durries are flat-woven rugs traditionally used as floor coverings and household furnishings. They are produced using weaving techniques that require patience, skill, and attention to detail.

Salawas has developed a reputation for its handwoven durries, making it an interesting destination for travellers who appreciate traditional textiles.

Depending on local arrangements, visitors may be able to observe artisans working on looms and learn about different patterns, materials, and weaving methods.

Understanding how these products are created can provide a deeper appreciation of the craftsmanship involved.

Travellers interested in visiting workshops should confirm availability beforehand, as artisan workplaces may not always be open to visitors.

3. Experience the Everyday Lifestyle of Rural Rajasthan

A visit to Salawas can offer a change from Jodhpur's busy streets and crowded sightseeing areas.

Rural communities have their own routines, occupations, and social traditions. Spending time in a village setting can help travellers understand how local life differs from the experiences typically presented at major tourist attractions.

Depending on the season and location, visitors may observe agricultural surroundings, traditional homes, and everyday community activities.

However, rural areas are residential and working environments rather than open tourist attractions.

Visitors should respect personal boundaries, seek permission before photographing residents, and avoid entering private spaces without an invitation.

Travelling with a knowledgeable local guide or host can help visitors understand the surroundings while respecting community customs.

4. Learn About Rajasthan's Traditional Handicraft Industry

Rajasthan has a long history of craftsmanship, including textiles, pottery, woodwork, leather products, and metalwork.

Traditional handicrafts are more than decorative products. They reflect regional knowledge, artistic skills, and techniques that have been developed and adapted over time.

A visit to Salawas can help travellers understand how local weaving traditions contribute to this broader handicraft heritage.

Learning about the production process also highlights the difference between handmade products and mass-produced alternatives.

If you decide to purchase a durry or another handmade item, ask about the materials, care instructions, and production methods.

Buying directly from artisans, when possible, can provide a clearer understanding of the product's origin and support the people involved in its creation.

5. Enjoy a Different Side of Rajasthani Food Culture

Food is an important part of Rajasthan's cultural identity. Traditional dishes often reflect the region's climate, agricultural practices, and locally available ingredients.

During a Jodhpur holiday, travellers can explore regional specialities such as dal baati churma, gatte ki sabzi, ker sangri, and bajra roti.

Those interested in home-style Rajasthani food can ask their accommodation or local host whether traditional meals are available.

A meal prepared using regional recipes can introduce visitors to ingredients and cooking practices that differ from standard restaurant menus.

However, food arrangements vary between properties and households, so availability should be confirmed in advance.

Travellers with allergies or dietary restrictions should also ask about ingredients before ordering.

6. Combine Salawas With Jodhpur's Heritage Attractions

Including Salawas in your itinerary does not mean missing Jodhpur's famous landmarks.

A well-planned two-day or three-day trip can combine historical sightseeing with rural experiences.

Spend your first day exploring Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada, and the blue-painted neighbourhoods of the old city.

You can also visit Toorji Ka Jhalra and browse the traditional markets around the Clock Tower.

On another day, arrange a visit to Salawas to explore its weaving heritage and rural surroundings.

Check travel times and transportation options before finalising your schedule. Allow enough time for each activity rather than trying to visit too many places in one day.

This approach helps travellers experience both Jodhpur's royal history and its living cultural traditions.

7. Consider Staying Near Salawas for a Rural Experience

Accommodation plays an important role in how travellers experience a destination.

Staying in central Jodhpur can be convenient for visitors who want to focus on monuments, shopping, and restaurants. However, travellers interested in exploring rural communities may also consider accommodation outside the busiest city areas.

When researching the Best Home Stay in Jodhpur, Salawas Homestay is an accommodation option worth exploring for visitors interested in the village and its surroundings.

Before booking, check the property's location, facilities, transport availability, and distance from the attractions included in your itinerary.

If you want to arrange a weaving workshop visit or explore nearby cultural experiences, confirm the available options before arrival.

Choosing accommodation that supports your travel interests can make your itinerary more practical and comfortable.

8. Experience a Quieter Environment Away From the City

Jodhpur's old city is known for its lively markets, narrow streets, and busy tourist attractions.

While this atmosphere is part of its charm, some travellers prefer quieter surroundings after a day of sightseeing.

A village setting may offer a more relaxed environment, depending on the location and accommodation.

Visitors can use this time to enjoy a slower travel schedule, observe the surrounding landscape, or simply rest between activities.

Rather than filling every hour with sightseeing, allowing time for relaxation can make a short Rajasthan holiday more enjoyable.

9. Travel Responsibly and Respect Local Communities

Responsible tourism is particularly important when visiting smaller villages and traditional craft communities.

Travellers should respect local customs, avoid disturbing working artisans, and ask permission before taking photographs.

If you visit a weaving workshop, follow the artisan's instructions and avoid touching tools or unfinished products without permission.

Consider purchasing locally made products when they suit your needs, and recognise the time and skill involved in handmade craftsmanship.

Avoid littering and be mindful of the surrounding environment.

These simple practices help create respectful interactions between travellers and local communities.

Practical Tips for Visiting Salawas

Plan your visit in advance: Research the village and confirm any craft workshop arrangements.
Arrange transportation: Check taxi availability or consider travelling with a private vehicle.
Choose comfortable timings: Morning and late afternoon can be preferable during warmer months.
Carry drinking water: Rajasthan's dry climate can make outdoor exploration tiring.
Respect local customs: Seek permission before photographing people or private properties.
Allow enough time: Avoid treating the village as a quick stop between several distant attractions.

Conclusion

Salawas offers travellers an opportunity to experience a side of Rajasthan that goes beyond forts, palaces, and crowded markets. Its traditional durry-weaving heritage, rural surroundings, and connection with local craftsmanship make it an interesting addition to a Jodhpur itinerary.

Whether you are interested in handmade textiles, regional food, or learning about everyday village life, visiting Salawas can add cultural depth to your holiday.

By combining Jodhpur's famous historical attractions with a thoughtfully planned rural visit, travellers can develop a broader understanding of Rajasthan's heritage and the communities that continue to preserve its traditions.
