Winter driving in Columbia, Missouri, can change quickly. A road that was merely wet an hour earlier can become slick when temperatures fall, while snow, sleet, freezing rain, and reduced visibility can make an ordinary commute much more difficult. Columbia sits at an important transportation crossroads, with Interstate 70, U.S. Highway 63, Business Loop 70, Stadium Boulevard, Providence Road, Broadway, Rangeline Street, and other heavily traveled corridors carrying traffic through the city every day.

Because Columbia has a large street network, winter road crews have to prioritize where they plow and treat first. That means drivers should understand how the city and Missouri Department of Transportation respond to storms instead of assuming every street will receive the same treatment at the same time. Before leaving home, check current road conditions and determine whether travel is genuinely necessary. Never start a winter commute in Columbia without checking whether a Columbia winter storm warning today is active, especially when snow, freezing rain, or rapidly falling temperatures are expected.

What Winter Roads Are Like in Columbia

Columbia's winter conditions can vary significantly from one part of town to another. Major roads may receive treatment while neighborhood streets remain snow-covered. A route that appears clear can also become slippery at intersections, hills, ramps, bridges, and shaded areas where pavement temperatures remain lower.

The City of Columbia maintains roughly 1,450 lane miles of streets, including more than 1,100 cul-de-sacs. Because crews cannot treat every lane simultaneously, the city uses a priority system. First- and second-priority routes receive the most attention during active winter weather. These routes connect major neighborhoods with schools, hospitals, emergency facilities, employers, and other important destinations.

City crews generally treat or pretreat bridges, curves, hills, and intersections on priority routes before concentrating on keeping those routes near normal conditions. Once priority roads are sufficiently passable, crews move toward other streets. When snowfall reaches about four inches, the city expands operations so that all streets can be addressed around the clock after priority routes have reached a passable condition.

For drivers, this means a neighborhood street may remain difficult even while a nearby arterial road is relatively clear. Do not judge road conditions solely by what you see outside your driveway. Check the city's snow-clearing information and MoDOT's traveler information before setting out.

Highways That Require Extra Winter Caution

Several major Columbia corridors deserve particular attention during snow and ice events. This does not mean every section is dangerous during every storm, but their traffic volumes, merging movements, ramps, hills, and intersections can make mistakes more consequential when traction is reduced.

Interstate 70

I-70 is one of the most important winter routes through Columbia. It carries high-speed interstate traffic, including passenger vehicles, commercial trucks, and travelers moving between Kansas City and St. Louis. MoDOT places interstates and other high-volume highways in its highest snow-removal priority category, with crews working continuously during storms until the routes are brought back toward normal conditions.

Even with active plowing and treatment, drivers should expect changing conditions on I-70. Traffic congestion can prevent vehicles from maintaining normal speeds, while sudden braking can create chain-reaction crashes. Leave more space than usual between vehicles, avoid abrupt lane changes, and be especially careful around entrance and exit ramps.

U.S. Highway 63

U.S. 63 is another major winter corridor. It carries substantial traffic through Columbia and connects the city with communities north and south of the area. Drivers entering or leaving Highway 63 should be alert for merging traffic, changing speeds, ramps, and icy pavement near bridges and elevated sections.

The Highway 63 and I-70 area is particularly important because drivers may encounter several lane changes and merging movements in a short distance. In winter, a driver who normally feels comfortable accelerating into a gap may need significantly more distance to stop or merge safely.

Business Loop 70

Business Loop 70 is another corridor where winter conditions can combine with frequent turning and merging movements. A recent City of Columbia safety assessment reviewed crash data from 2019 through 2024 and found that intersections accounted for the large majority of crashes along the four-mile Business Loop 70 corridor studied.

During snow or freezing rain, drivers should be particularly careful around intersections connecting Business Loop 70 with Stadium Boulevard, Providence Road, Rangeline Street, Garth Avenue, and nearby ramps. Slow down before entering an intersection rather than braking hard once you are already in it.

Stadium Boulevard

Stadium Boulevard connects major parts of Columbia and carries significant traffic near the University of Missouri, commercial areas, Highway 63, and I-70. The Stadium and I-70 area can become especially complicated when traffic backs up onto ramps or when vehicles change lanes abruptly.

Winter drivers should avoid following too closely through this corridor. If a vehicle ahead loses traction, there may be little time to react. Maintain a generous following distance and reduce speed before curves, ramps, and intersections.

Intersections That Deserve Extra Attention

There is no single intersection that is dangerous every time it snows, and crash risk changes with traffic volume, storm intensity, road treatment, and driver behavior. However, several busy Columbia intersections and interchanges deserve additional caution because they combine heavy traffic with merging, turning, or complex lane movements.

Stadium Boulevard and I-70: Expect merging traffic, ramps, lane changes, and congestion. Winter conditions can make these movements harder to complete safely.
Stadium Boulevard and Providence Road: This busy corridor near the University of Missouri can become challenging when snow reduces lane visibility and turning space.
Broadway and Providence Road: Downtown traffic, turning movements, pedestrians, and multiple access points require extra awareness when roads are slick.
Business Loop 70 and Providence Road: Drivers should be prepared for changing traffic patterns and reduced stopping ability.
Highway 63 and the I-70 connector area: Multiple lanes and merging movements make smooth speed control particularly important.
Business Loop 70 and Stadium Boulevard: The city's recent safety assessment identified this intersection as one of the locations with significant crash history along the Business Loop corridor.

At any busy Columbia intersection, the safest approach is to slow down before reaching the crossing, avoid sudden acceleration, and leave enough room to stop if the traffic signal changes unexpectedly.

How Columbia Plows and Treats Roads

Columbia's snow response is based on priority rather than a simple street-by-street schedule. During a winter weather event, approximately 520 lane miles of priority routes can receive continuous plowing and treatment. Other roads are handled as crews progress through the priority network.

First-priority streets include major arterial routes such as Broadway, Green Meadows Road, and Vandiver Drive. Second-priority routes include heavily traveled collector and residential streets serving schools, public safety facilities, hospitals, and connections to major roads.

The city also coordinates with Boone County and MoDOT. Columbia handles city streets that are not assigned to another agency, Boone County handles county roads, and MoDOT handles major state-maintained routes within the city. This is why drivers may see different types of snowplows working in the same general area.

MoDOT's system gives the highest priority to interstates and higher-volume highways. Those routes are treated continuously during a storm until crews can restore them toward normal conditions. Lower-volume state routes receive attention afterward, with salt or abrasives used particularly on hills, curves, intersections, and other trouble spots.

There is therefore no fixed time such as "all roads will be clear two hours after snowfall." The duration depends on snowfall rate, ice accumulation, pavement temperature, traffic, wind, equipment availability, and whether precipitation continues.

Salt, Brine, and Why Roads Can Still Be Slick

Columbia uses several treatments during winter weather, including dry salt, liquid brine, calcium chloride solutions, and in some circumstances a beet-juice additive mixed with brine. The city has reported storing up to 5,000 tons of dry salt for winter operations and maintains a fleet of more than 40 pieces of snow-response equipment.

Salt does not instantly make a road safe. Its effectiveness decreases as pavement temperatures fall, and extremely cold conditions can limit how quickly traditional road salt melts ice. That is one reason a road can remain slick even after a plow or salt truck has passed.

Drivers should also remember that a plow may make several passes over the same priority route during an ongoing storm. A freshly cleared lane can become snow-covered again within minutes when precipitation continues.

Bridges and Overpasses Freeze First

One of the most important winter-driving rules in Columbia is to treat bridges and overpasses as potential ice zones. Bridges lose heat from above and below, so their pavement can freeze sooner than pavement on the ground.

This is especially important when temperatures hover around freezing. A road can look merely wet while a bridge a short distance ahead has already developed a thin layer of ice.

Use extra caution on overpasses along I-70, Highway 63, Stadium Boulevard, and other major routes. Do not accelerate suddenly as you approach a bridge, and avoid hard braking while crossing it.

Shaded sections of road can create a similar problem. Trees, buildings, and terrain can prevent sunlight from warming pavement, leaving isolated icy patches even after nearby pavement has dried.

Public Transit Can Be an Alternative

When winter driving conditions are poor, public transportation may provide an alternative to taking a private vehicle. Go COMO is Columbia's public transit provider, offering fixed-route bus service, paratransit, and University of Missouri shuttle services.

However, transit service can also be affected by severe winter weather. During a significant storm, buses may operate on modified schedules, emergency schedules, or experience delays if neighborhood streets become difficult to navigate. Paratransit riders may face additional delays or cancellations when vans cannot safely reach neighborhood streets.

During a storm, check current Go COMO information before heading to a bus stop. The ETA SPOT app provides real-time bus tracking, route planning, arrival predictions, and alerts about major delays or service disruptions.

If you do use the bus during a snow or ice event, give yourself extra time to reach the stop. Sidewalks and curb areas may be slippery even when the main road has been treated. Wear footwear with good traction and stay well away from the roadway while waiting.

Columbia's Snow-Route Parking Rules

Parking can directly affect how quickly Columbia streets are cleared. First- and second-priority snow routes have special parking restrictions when snow accumulation reaches two inches or more.

Vehicles left on those designated routes can be ticketed and towed at the owner's expense. The purpose is to give plow operators enough room to work safely and efficiently. Parked cars can force plows to maneuver around obstacles, leaving snow packed near the vehicle and slowing progress along the entire street.

Priority snow routes are marked with red, white, and blue signs indicating that parking is prohibited when snow exceeds two inches. Residents can also sign up for city alerts that notify them when vehicles must be moved and when parking restrictions are lifted.

Third-priority roads are treated differently, but residents are still encouraged to move vehicles off the street when possible. A driveway, garage, or other legal off-street location gives snowplows more room and reduces the possibility of your vehicle becoming trapped behind a snowbank.

Do You Need Snow Tires or Tire Chains?

Missouri does not generally require ordinary passenger vehicles in Columbia to use winter tires during a snowstorm. However, tire condition matters enormously. Cold temperatures reduce tire pressure, and worn tread reduces the ability of a vehicle to grip snow and slush.

Columbia police recommend checking tire tread and maintaining the manufacturer's recommended tire pressure. Dedicated winter tires can provide additional traction in areas that experience substantial snow and ice, although all-season tires may be adequate for many drivers depending on their condition and driving needs.

Missouri law specifically regulates studded tires. Metal or carbide-studded tires cannot be used on Missouri roads from April 1 through November 1. In practical terms, this means the winter period is when their use is legally permitted under state law.

Before installing any specialized traction equipment, drivers should verify the applicable state and vehicle requirements and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Tire chains should never be used simply because a driver assumes they are necessary; they must be appropriate for the vehicle, tires, road conditions, and clearance around the wheels.

How to Drive During a Columbia Snowstorm

The most important winter-driving decision is whether you need to travel at all. If officials are advising people to stay off the roads, postponing a trip can eliminate the risk entirely.

If you must drive, reduce speed and increase following distance. Do not use cruise control on snowy, icy, or wet roads because it can interfere with your ability to respond to changing traction.

Brake smoothly. With anti-lock brakes, apply firm and continuous pressure when an emergency stop is necessary. Avoid sudden steering movements, especially while entering curves or changing lanes.

Keep headlights on when visibility is reduced, and make sure snow and ice are completely removed from windows, mirrors, lights, and the roof of the vehicle. Snow blowing from the roof can obstruct your own view or create a hazard for another driver.

When approaching a snowplow, give it plenty of space. MoDOT recommends staying well back from snowplows and avoiding attempts to pass them. A plow operator may have limited visibility, while the equipment can throw snow, salt, and other material into surrounding lanes.

Prepare Your Car Before the Storm

A winter emergency kit does not have to be complicated. Columbia drivers should consider keeping a flashlight, phone charger, warm clothing, gloves, blankets, water, nonperishable food, a first-aid kit, jumper cables, an ice scraper, a small shovel, and a traction material such as sand in the vehicle.

Check your battery before the coldest part of winter. Inspect windshield wipers and keep adequate windshield-washer fluid in the vehicle. Check tire pressure regularly because pressure can fall as temperatures drop.

Keep the fuel tank reasonably full before a major storm. A traffic jam or crash-related closure can turn a normally short Columbia trip into a long wait.

A Simple Columbia Winter Driving Checklist

Check the forecast and current road conditions before leaving.
Check whether a winter weather warning or other travel advisory is active.
Move your vehicle from first- and second-priority snow routes when the two-inch restriction takes effect.
Check the City of Columbia snow-clearing map during major storms.
Check MoDOT road conditions before traveling on I-70, Highway 63, or other state routes.
Expect bridges, overpasses, shaded roads, ramps, and intersections to become icy before surrounding pavement.
Slow down and increase following distance.
Do not use cruise control on snowy or icy roads.
Give snowplows plenty of room and never attempt an unsafe pass.
Keep an emergency kit in the vehicle.
Consider Go COMO when driving conditions are poor, but check for weather-related service changes first.
If travel is not necessary, wait until roads have been plowed and treated.

Final Thoughts on Winter Driving in Columbia

Safe winter driving in Columbia depends on understanding both the weather and the local transportation system. I-70, Highway 63, Business Loop 70, Stadium Boulevard, Providence Road, Broadway, and other major corridors receive significant attention during storms, but treatment does not eliminate the possibility of ice or snow-covered pavement.

The city's priority-route system is designed to keep critical transportation corridors functioning before crews move into lower-priority residential streets. That means drivers should plan around the possibility that their neighborhood road may remain snow-covered after a nearby arterial has been treated.

Pay special attention to bridges, overpasses, ramps, hills, shaded pavement, and busy intersections. Keep your vehicle properly maintained, understand Columbia's snow-route parking rules, and monitor transit and road-condition updates when conditions deteriorate.

Most importantly, do not confuse a plowed road with a completely safe road. Winter weather can change faster than road crews can respond. Slowing down, leaving extra space, postponing unnecessary trips, and making decisions based on current conditions are among the most effective ways Columbia drivers can reduce winter travel risks.
