Winter driving in Grand Rapids, Michigan, can change quickly. A route that seems manageable at the start of a commute can become snow-covered, icy, or difficult to navigate within a short time. Lake-effect snow, freezing temperatures, blowing snow, refreezing after a daytime thaw, and heavy traffic can all create challenging conditions across Kent County and the Grand Rapids metro area.

Drivers also need to understand how local road crews prioritize snow removal, which major roads receive attention first, where bridges and elevated roadways can become icy, and what alternatives are available when driving is a poor choice. Before leaving home, check current conditions, traffic cameras, closures, and forecasts. Never start a winter commute without checking whether a Grand Rapids winter storm warning today is active and whether road conditions along your route have deteriorated.

The following guide focuses specifically on winter driving around Grand Rapids, including major highways, city streets, snowplow operations, parking rules, public transportation, bridges, and Michigan's requirements for winter tires and tire chains.

What Grand Rapids Roads Are Like During a Winter Storm

Grand Rapids has several different types of roads, and they do not all become hazardous at the same time. Major state highways and high-volume city streets generally receive attention before neighborhood roads. The City of Grand Rapids identifies major, high-traffic streets as “first-attention” routes and applies salt to those routes. Examples include Burton Street, Division Avenue, Fulton Street, Leonard Street, and Monroe Avenue.

Neighborhood streets, cul-de-sacs, alleys, and other secondary routes can remain snow-covered longer. The city says it monitors weather and generally moves to secondary streets and alleys after more than three inches of snow has accumulated. During an extended storm, crews may return to major roads instead of continuing on local streets because keeping high-volume routes usable remains a priority.

That difference matters when planning a commute. Your main road may be relatively clear while the residential street at either end of the trip remains packed with snow. Conversely, a road that was plowed earlier can quickly become covered again while snow continues to fall.

Grand Rapids also uses de-icing materials differently depending on the road. Salt is routinely used on first-attention streets, while secondary streets typically receive less salt unless hills, curves, or other special circumstances justify additional treatment.

Major Grand Rapids Highways That Require Extra Winter Caution

Several highways carry substantial traffic through the Grand Rapids area. During a snowstorm, the combination of speed, lane changes, merging, ramps, reduced visibility, and changing pavement conditions makes these roads particularly important to monitor.

US-131

US-131 is one of the most important north-south routes through Grand Rapids. The downtown section includes the well-known S-curve between Wealthy Street and Pearl Street, where the freeway crosses the Grand River and several local roads. MDOT describes the broader US-131 corridor in the Grand Rapids area as a heavily traveled facility with congestion, delays, and incidents.

Winter drivers should be especially cautious around downtown ramps and lane transitions. Snow can accumulate between lanes, and drivers moving quickly from one lane to another can lose traction. Sudden braking near an interchange is another common winter hazard.

There are also active infrastructure projects in the area during 2026. MDOT has scheduled bridge and lighting work around US-131, including work near I-196 and the S-curve. Lane and ramp closures can change the normal traffic pattern, so drivers should check current information before traveling through downtown.

I-196

I-196 serves as an important east-west route through the Grand Rapids area. Its connections with US-131 create busy merging and diverging movements, particularly around downtown.

During snow, drivers should avoid assuming that a freeway ramp will have the same traction as the main lanes. Ramps can be shaded, curved, elevated, or exposed to wind, allowing ice to form quickly. Reduce speed before entering a ramp rather than braking sharply once you are already on the curve.

I-96

I-96 is another major route serving Grand Rapids and surrounding communities. Traffic volumes can remain high even when conditions are deteriorating. If a storm arrives during a morning or afternoon commute, vehicles entering from suburban areas can encounter different pavement conditions as they approach the city.

Give yourself more time, increase following distance, and watch for vehicles changing lanes unexpectedly. If visibility drops because of blowing snow, headlights and reduced speed become more important than maintaining the normal freeway pace.

Grand Rapids Intersections and Locations That Deserve Extra Attention

There is not a single official list of the “most dangerous winter intersections” in Grand Rapids, and conditions can change from one storm to another. Instead, drivers should pay special attention to locations where high traffic, turning movements, hills, freeway ramps, bridges, and pedestrian activity overlap.

Downtown connections involving US-131, I-196, Pearl Street, Fulton Street, Wealthy Street, and Division Avenue deserve careful attention during snow and ice. The US-131 S-curve is particularly important because it combines freeway traffic with curves, bridges, ramps, and downtown access points.

Major city corridors such as Division Avenue, Fulton Street, Burton Street, Leonard Street, and Monroe Avenue are also important winter routes because they carry significant traffic and are among the city's first-attention streets for snow operations.

At signalized intersections, do not assume the pavement will stop your vehicle normally. Snow and ice can substantially increase stopping distance. Michigan State Police advises drivers to anticipate braking well before an intersection rather than waiting until the last moment.

Why Bridges Freeze Before Ordinary Roads

Bridges deserve special attention during Grand Rapids winters. An elevated bridge deck is exposed to cold air from above and below, so it can lose heat more rapidly than pavement resting on the ground. When moisture is present, this can create icy conditions even when nearby road surfaces appear merely wet.

That means drivers should be particularly cautious on bridges crossing the Grand River and on elevated freeway structures around downtown. The US-131 S-curve includes multiple bridge structures over the Grand River and local roads. The Fulton Street bridge also crosses the Grand River in the downtown area.

Other elevated structures around freeway interchanges can develop slick spots, especially during freezing rain or when temperatures fall rapidly after sunset.

Do not accelerate aggressively when entering a bridge. Maintain a steady speed, avoid sudden lane changes, and leave additional space between your vehicle and the one ahead. City crews may pretreat bridges, hills, and curves with de-icing material when conditions warrant, but pretreatment cannot guarantee bare pavement throughout an entire storm.

How Grand Rapids Snowplows and Salt Operations Work

The City of Grand Rapids says its primary goal is to clear city roads within approximately 24 to 36 hours after a weather event. That does not mean every street will be completely clear immediately after snowfall ends.

First-attention roads receive priority because they carry the highest traffic volumes. Salt is applied to those routes, and crews concentrate on keeping them functional during active storms.

Secondary streets and alleys are handled afterward when snowfall reaches the city's threshold for those routes. Local streets may remain covered longer, particularly during a prolonged storm when crews need to return to major routes.

The city also uses pre-wetted salt on roads. According to the city, pre-wetting helps the material stay on the road surface and activate more quickly while reducing the amount of salt needed.

MDOT is responsible for Michigan's state highway system, including I-, M-, and US-routes. Its winter operations include plowing and treating state highways, while Mi Drive provides current information about traffic, road conditions, incidents, construction, and MDOT plow locations.

MDOT also operates a winter level-of-service system showing maintenance priority levels under prevailing weather conditions. Drivers can use Mi Drive before leaving to check cameras and active road conditions rather than relying solely on what the road looked like during a previous trip.

How to Drive Around a Snowplow

Snowplows are a normal part of winter travel around Grand Rapids, but following one too closely can be dangerous. Snow clouds from the blade can temporarily block visibility, and plows may stop, turn, change lanes, or spread salt without much warning.

Michigan law requires motorists to remain at least 200 feet behind a snowplow that is operating under the applicable conditions. When approaching a snowplow from behind while it is stopped at an intersection, drivers must stop at least 20 feet away.

Do not attempt to squeeze between multiple plows working together. Avoid passing unless it is legally permitted and can be done safely. A few extra minutes behind a plow is preferable to losing control on a snow-covered lane.

Winter Parking Rules in Grand Rapids

Winter parking rules can affect whether snowplows can reach your street. Grand Rapids has seasonal parking restrictions on streets that are posted for them. These restrictions generally run from November 1 through April 1.

On designated odd-even streets, vehicles must follow the address-number system between 1 a.m. and 6 p.m. On odd dates, parking is permitted on the side with odd-numbered addresses; on even dates, parking is permitted on the even-numbered side.

Between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m., both sides may generally be used unless signs state otherwise. The vehicle must then be moved to the correct side before 1 a.m. for the following date.

Some streets have one-side restrictions instead, meaning parking is prohibited on the posted side at all times. Drivers should always follow the signs on their particular block rather than assuming every Grand Rapids street follows the same system.

The city states that these restrictions help crews plow streets, allow emergency vehicles to pass, and provide room for winter street maintenance. Parking violations can also result in tickets, even if snow is not currently on the ground.

Snow Emergencies and Temporary Restrictions

Grand Rapids also has authority to restrict parking on snow routes when conditions require additional space for snow removal. City ordinances allow snow-route restrictions to be imposed where traffic density, roadway conditions, protection of life and property, or other hazards make them advisable.

If temporary restrictions are announced during a major storm, move your vehicle promptly. A car left on a snow route can interfere with plowing and may become surrounded by snow after repeated passes from heavy equipment.

Whenever possible, use a driveway or another off-street location during major snowfall. Do not push or blow snow into the street because moving traffic and plows can send it back toward parked vehicles, driveways, or sidewalks.

Using The Rapid Instead of Driving

When road conditions become difficult, public transportation can provide an alternative to putting another vehicle on the road. The Rapid serves the Grand Rapids metropolitan area with fixed-route buses, Bus Rapid Transit services, and demand-response transportation.

During a winter storm, check the agency's current service information before leaving. Snow and ice can create delays, route changes, missed connections, or difficult access to bus stops even when service continues.

Bus riders should also remember that the road to the bus stop may be less accessible than the main road. Snowbanks can narrow sidewalks and make it harder for buses to pull close to a curb. Wear appropriate winter footwear, allow extra time, and avoid standing directly beside the roadway while waiting.

The Rapid's live route information can help riders determine where buses are located and whether their expected connection is running normally. For people who qualify for accessible transportation, The Rapid also operates GO!Bus and other specialized services.

Are Snow Tires Required in Michigan?

Michigan does not generally require ordinary passenger vehicles to be equipped with dedicated winter tires simply because it is winter. However, tire condition is extremely important in Grand Rapids because cold temperatures, snow, slush, and ice can all reduce traction.

Michigan State Police notes that summer tires are not designed for freezing temperatures or snow and ice. All-season tires can handle a wide variety of conditions but have more limited winter performance. Winter tires use compounds and tread designs intended to provide better traction in cold conditions.

Drivers who regularly commute during heavy snowfall should consider whether their current tires provide enough cold-weather traction for their vehicle and driving needs. Regardless of tire type, check tread depth, tire pressure, damage, and age before winter begins.

Are Tire Chains Legal in Grand Rapids?

Tire chains are legal in Michigan under certain circumstances. Michigan State Police states that state law permits a person to use tire chains of reasonable proportion when required for safety because of snow, ice, or another condition tending to cause a vehicle to skid. The chains must not contact the roadway surface.

For most Grand Rapids passenger-car drivers, properly maintained winter or all-season tires are a more practical everyday solution than chains. Chains can also be inappropriate for certain vehicles, tires, or road surfaces, so drivers should follow the vehicle manufacturer's instructions.

If you plan to use chains, learn how to install them before a storm. Discovering that they do not fit while stopped on the shoulder during heavy snowfall is not a situation you want to face.

Prepare Your Vehicle Before the First Major Storm

Winter preparation should happen before the forecast turns serious. Check the battery, windshield washer fluid, wipers, defroster, lights, tire pressure, tire tread, brakes, and cooling system.

Keep at least half a tank of fuel during severe winter weather. Carry an ice scraper, snow brush, gloves, blanket, flashlight, phone charger, water, basic first-aid supplies, and other equipment appropriate for the length of your normal commute.

Before driving, remove snow and ice from the entire vehicle. Clear headlights, taillights, mirrors, windows, the roof, hood, and trunk. Snow left on a roof can slide forward during braking or blow onto another vehicle.

What to Do if Your Vehicle Gets Stuck

If your car becomes stuck in Grand Rapids snow, avoid repeatedly spinning the tires. Excessive wheelspin can dig the vehicle deeper into the snow and create a packed-ice surface underneath the tires.

Straighten the wheels, clear snow away from the tires if it is safe to do so, and use gentle acceleration. If you become stranded on a roadway, turn on hazard lights and remain with the vehicle unless staying there presents an immediate danger.

Never run an engine in an enclosed garage. If the vehicle is stuck outside and you need to run the heater, make sure the exhaust pipe remains completely clear of snow so exhaust gases cannot accumulate inside the passenger compartment.

A Safer Grand Rapids Winter Commute

Safe winter driving in Grand Rapids depends on understanding that road conditions are not uniform. US-131, I-196, I-96, downtown bridges, major city streets, neighborhood roads, ramps, and parking areas can all behave differently during the same storm.

Check conditions before leaving, slow down when pavement is snowy or icy, and leave more following distance than you would in dry weather. Michigan's winter-driving guidance emphasizes that drivers should adjust their speed to conditions rather than automatically traveling at the posted limit.

Give snowplows plenty of space, follow seasonal parking restrictions, and use public transportation or postpone the trip when conditions become unnecessarily hazardous. Most importantly, do not assume that because a major road has been treated, every part of your route is safe. The first mile from your driveway, the final neighborhood street, a bridge deck, a freeway ramp, or an untreated intersection may be the section that determines whether the entire trip is safe.

With preparation, current road information, appropriate tires, and a willingness to slow down or change plans, Grand Rapids drivers can reduce the risks that come with Michigan's long winter season.
