Winter driving in International Falls is different from simply driving on a snowy city street. Located in far northern Minnesota near the Canadian border and surrounded by forests, lakes, open stretches of highway, and rural roads, the community can experience heavy snow, blowing snow, extreme cold, freezing precipitation, and rapidly changing visibility. A road that was reasonably passable earlier in the day can become snow-covered or icy after a short period of wind or additional snowfall.

For local drivers, preparation starts before the vehicle leaves the driveway. Check the forecast, inspect the vehicle, fill the fuel tank, and look at current highway conditions before committing to a trip. Never start a winter commute in International Falls without checking whether a International Falls winter storm warning today is active. During severe storms, the combination of snowfall, wind, drifting, and poor visibility can make even familiar roads difficult to navigate.

What Winter Roads Are Like Around International Falls

International Falls can develop several different winter driving surfaces during the same storm. Fresh snow may cover pavement quickly, while traffic compresses snow into a harder layer. Freezing rain can create a thin layer of ice, and melting snow can refreeze when temperatures fall. Strong winds can also move loose snow back across roads after plows have passed.

The rural character of the area adds another challenge. Outside the developed parts of International Falls, drivers may encounter long stretches with fewer buildings, fewer places to stop, and limited shelter if a vehicle becomes disabled. Blowing snow can create temporary whiteout conditions even when snowfall itself is not especially heavy.

MnDOT advises motorists to slow down for current conditions, turn on headlights, avoid cruise control, and remain alert around snowplows. Drivers should stay at least 10 car lengths behind a plow and avoid driving into the cloud of snow produced by the equipment.

Highway conditions should be checked shortly before departure rather than relying only on the weather forecast. MnDOT's 511 system provides current information for state highways, including road-condition information and available cameras. During extreme storms, MnDOT can also close roads when snowfall and visibility become dangerous enough that continued travel presents a serious safety risk.

US Highway 53 and Other Major Routes

Several major highways connect International Falls with surrounding communities and provide important regional travel routes. US Highway 53 is particularly important for trips toward Virginia, Orr, and other points south. Minnesota Highway 11 runs through International Falls and provides the primary east-west connection toward communities such as Baudette and northern Minnesota destinations. Minnesota Highway 71 is another important regional route, particularly for longer trips toward southern and central parts of the state.

These highways can be deceptively difficult during winter storms. A driver may leave town on a road that has been recently plowed and encounter drifting snow several miles farther away. Rural highway sections can also have fewer windbreaks, allowing strong winds to push snow across the pavement.

When planning a trip outside International Falls, look beyond the condition of the first few miles. A route may appear manageable inside town while deteriorating significantly farther along the highway. This is particularly important when traveling toward remote communities or crossing long rural stretches where turning around may be difficult.

Where Winter Driving Becomes Most Difficult in Town

There is not a reliable public list identifying individual International Falls intersections as the most dangerous winter intersections, so drivers should avoid treating any particular intersection as permanently hazardous. Instead, several types of locations deserve extra attention during snow and ice events.

Highway intersections: Intersections along major routes can develop packed snow, ice, and ridges where vehicles repeatedly accelerate and brake.
Signalized intersections: Frequent stopping and starting can polish snow into slippery surfaces, especially when temperatures remain well below freezing.
Downtown intersections: Parked vehicles, snowbanks, narrowed lanes, and pedestrian activity can reduce visibility and maneuvering space.
Residential side-street connections: A plowed main street does not necessarily mean the adjoining residential street has received the same level of service.
Driveway and alley entrances: Windrows left after street plowing can make turning into alleys, businesses, and homes unexpectedly difficult.

International Falls' snow-control policy specifically gives priority to trunk highways, arterial and collector streets, and emergency-service access. Residential streets and alleys are generally handled at later priority levels.

Bridges and Elevated Road Sections Can Freeze First

Drivers should be especially careful on bridges and other elevated road surfaces. Unlike ordinary pavement, a bridge deck is exposed to cold air above and below, allowing it to lose heat quickly. That means a bridge can become icy while nearby pavement still appears merely wet.

MnDOT specifically recommends reducing speed on bridges, overpasses, and tunnels because these locations can develop black ice. Black ice is especially dangerous because it can be difficult to see until the vehicle begins to lose traction.

In the International Falls area, this principle is important anywhere a route crosses water, a drainage channel, or an elevated structure. Drivers should avoid sudden braking or steering movements when approaching a potentially icy bridge. Increase following distance before reaching the structure instead of trying to compensate once the vehicle is already on ice.

How International Falls Snowplowing Works

The City of International Falls does not operate under a strict bare-pavement policy. Its snow and ice control policy states that operations generally begin based on current and anticipated conditions, including significant accumulation, rain or ice storms, and slippery conditions. Plowing may be repeated during continuing snowfall, and snowpack can remain on the roadway when conditions make complete pavement clearing impractical.

The city works in cooperation with MnDOT and Koochiching County on trunk highways and county state-aid highways. City priorities place trunk highways and emergency-service access first, followed by arterial and collector streets. Residential streets, avenues, alleys, pedestrian facilities, and other lower-priority areas are addressed afterward.

This means residents should not expect every street to be cleared simultaneously. During a long-duration storm, crews may return to major roads multiple times before lower-priority residential streets receive the same level of attention.

Why You May Not See a Plow Immediately

Snowplows do not make roads instantly clear. During heavy snowfall, a road may be plowed and become covered again within minutes. Strong wind can also refill lanes with drifting snow after equipment has passed.

MnDOT explains that highway route cycles vary depending on location and conditions, and crews also need time to refuel and reload materials. The agency uses pavement and weather information to help determine which treatment materials are appropriate for current conditions.

Salt also has limitations in International Falls' very cold climate. MnDOT notes that salt becomes significantly less effective as pavement temperatures fall below roughly 15 degrees Fahrenheit. At lower temperatures, additional chemicals may be used to improve deicing performance.

Because of this, drivers should never interpret a visible layer of snow or ice as evidence that road crews have failed to treat the roadway. Temperature, wind, precipitation type, and traffic all affect how quickly a treated road becomes passable.

What to Do Around Snowplows

Snowplows are working in conditions that may already be difficult for ordinary motorists. Their blades can extend beyond the main body of the truck, and snow clouds can dramatically reduce visibility around the vehicle.

Stay well behind the plow rather than attempting to pass it. MnDOT recommends at least 10 car lengths of following distance. Drivers should also remember that plows may move across lanes, turn unexpectedly, or partially cross the centerline while clearing snow.

If a plow passes your street and leaves a ridge of snow across your driveway, avoid immediately pushing that snow back into the roadway. Minnesota law restricts unauthorized placement of snow on public roads, and the International Falls snow policy specifically reminds residents of this restriction.

Parking Rules Matter During Snow Removal

Parking can interfere with snow removal just as much as a poorly prepared vehicle. International Falls uses calendar parking on designated streets. Where signs indicate that calendar parking applies, vehicles must be parked on the side corresponding to the calendar date: even-numbered addresses on even dates and odd-numbered addresses on odd dates. The city's designated change period is from 6 p.m. to midnight.

These rules are important during winter because plows and sanding equipment need enough room to operate. A vehicle parked in the wrong location can force a plow operator to maneuver around it, leaving snow in the lane or reducing the effectiveness of the entire route.

Drivers should always look for posted signs before parking and pay attention to temporary announcements if normal parking arrangements are suspended or changed. The city can suspend calendar parking with public notice.

Public Transportation During Winter Storms

When driving conditions deteriorate, public transportation can provide an alternative to taking a private vehicle onto slippery roads. International Falls is served by transportation providers including Arrowhead Transit, while local taxi services can also be an option when operating conditions permit.

Before relying on a scheduled ride during a major storm, passengers should confirm the current service status and allow extra time. Snow-covered streets, reduced visibility, and delays caused by road conditions can affect travel times. For people who cannot safely drive themselves, arranging transportation before the storm becomes severe is generally more practical than waiting until conditions have already deteriorated.

For longer trips, passengers should also verify whether connecting services are operating. A bus or taxi may be available locally while a regional connection is delayed or canceled because of highway conditions.

Winter Tires, Tire Chains, and Traction

Minnesota does not impose a general requirement that ordinary passenger vehicles use dedicated winter tires. However, that does not mean tire choice is unimportant in International Falls. Winter tires are designed to maintain flexibility and traction at low temperatures, while worn all-season tires may provide substantially less grip on snow and ice.

Minnesota law permits tire chains of reasonable proportions on vehicles when they are required for safety because of snow, ice, or other conditions that tend to cause skidding.

Chains should not be treated as a substitute for sensible driving. They are most useful when conditions genuinely require additional traction, and drivers should understand the manufacturer's requirements for their particular vehicle before installing them. Practice putting chains on before an emergency rather than learning in a snowbank beside a highway.

Regardless of tire type, inspect tread depth, inflation pressure, sidewalls, and overall tire condition before winter. Minnesota considers tires unsafe when tread depth falls below the state's legal threshold or when certain forms of damage are present.

How to Drive on Packed Snow and Ice

Slow, smooth inputs are the foundation of winter driving. Accelerate gently, brake earlier than you normally would, and leave significantly more space between your vehicle and the one ahead.

Do not wait until the last second to brake for an intersection. If a traffic light changes ahead, begin reducing speed while the vehicle still has good traction. Sudden braking on an icy surface can cause the tires to lose grip.

When turning, reduce speed before the turn rather than braking sharply while steering. Keep both hands available for steering and avoid unnecessary lane changes when snow is accumulating between lanes.

Cruise control should be avoided during winter conditions. If the vehicle begins to hydroplane or lose traction, cruise control can interfere with the driver's ability to respond smoothly. MnDOT specifically advises motorists not to use cruise control in winter driving conditions.

What to Keep in the Vehicle

A winter emergency kit is especially valuable for drivers traveling outside International Falls. Recommended supplies include a warm blanket or sleeping bag, extra winter clothing, gloves, a hat, flashlight, reflective equipment, jumper cables or an appropriate jump-start device, first-aid supplies, bottled water, snacks, and a fully charged phone.

Keep the fuel tank reasonably full when severe weather is expected. If a vehicle becomes stranded, the ability to run the engine periodically for heat may become important. Make sure the exhaust pipe remains clear of snow before running the engine, because blocked exhaust can allow carbon monoxide to build up inside the vehicle.

Travelers heading onto rural highways should tell someone where they are going and approximately when they expect to arrive. If conditions worsen dramatically, reconsidering the trip before leaving is safer than discovering halfway through that the highway has become impassable.

What to Do If You Become Stranded

If your vehicle becomes disabled during a winter storm, stay with the vehicle unless emergency officials specifically instruct you to leave. A vehicle provides shelter from wind and can be easier for rescuers to locate than a person walking through blowing snow.

Call 911 if you need emergency assistance. Turn on hazard lights when appropriate, and conserve fuel by running the engine intermittently while ensuring the exhaust remains clear. Keep yourself insulated from the cold and monitor changing conditions.

Do not assume that a nearby road or building is safely reachable on foot. Whiteout conditions can make familiar distances difficult to judge, and extreme cold can turn a short walk into a serious exposure risk.

Before Every Winter Trip in International Falls

Check the current forecast and highway conditions.
Check 511 before traveling on state highways.
Inspect tires and verify correct tire pressure.
Clear snow and ice completely from windows, mirrors, lights, and the roof.
Fill the fuel tank before a major storm.
Carry a winter emergency kit.
Allow substantially more stopping distance.
Slow down before bridges and intersections.
Stay at least 10 car lengths behind snowplows.
Never drive around a road-closure barricade.
Follow posted calendar-parking requirements.
Consider postponing unnecessary travel when visibility becomes poor.

Final Thoughts

Winter driving in International Falls requires more than knowing how to handle snow. Drivers need to understand how quickly conditions can change, how local plowing priorities work, why bridges and intersections can become icy, and why a treated highway may still have snow or ice on its surface.

The safest approach is to make the decision before leaving home. Check road conditions, prepare the vehicle, choose an appropriate route, and give yourself enough time to travel slowly. When a major storm brings whiteout conditions or a formal travel advisory, postponing a trip may be the most practical option.

International Falls has an extensive winter maintenance system involving city crews, Koochiching County, and MnDOT, but even well-maintained roads cannot remain clear instantly during heavy snow, strong winds, or extreme cold. The responsibility for safe winter travel therefore belongs to both road crews and motorists. Drivers who prepare early, respect plows, understand local parking rules, maintain good tires, and adjust their speed to actual conditions are better positioned to handle the challenges of a northern Minnesota winter.
