Winter driving in Lexington, Kentucky can change quickly. A morning commute that begins on wet pavement can turn into a slippery trip when temperatures fall, while snow, sleet, freezing rain, and refreezing can create difficult conditions even after precipitation has stopped. Lexington's mix of busy arterial roads, interstates, hills, bridges, overpasses, residential streets, and rural connections around Fayette County means drivers need to understand more than basic winter driving advice.

Before leaving home during a major storm, check the latest road and weather information. Never begin a winter commute without checking whether a Lexington winter storm warning today is active, and pay attention to official instructions about whether travel should be avoided. During the January 2026 winter storm, Lexington officials specifically urged residents to stay off roads except for emergencies while city crews worked through snow, sleet, and freezing rain.

Why Winter Roads Can Be Dangerous in Lexington

Lexington does not need a major snowstorm for driving conditions to become hazardous. A relatively small amount of snow followed by a temperature drop can produce packed snow and ice. Freezing rain can create a glaze on pavement, while melting snow can refreeze overnight. Shaded areas may remain icy after sunny sections have become wet.

The city's winter response specifically identifies bridges and overpasses as areas requiring extra attention because they typically freeze before other road surfaces. KYTC likewise warns drivers that bridges, entrance ramps, and exit ramps can become icy even when surrounding pavement appears manageable.

Lexington drivers should therefore think beyond the question, “Has the snow stopped?” The more useful questions are: Has the pavement been treated? Has the temperature dropped below freezing? Is the road shaded? Has traffic compacted snow into a hard surface? And have crews had enough time to complete their routes?

Local Road Conditions During Snow and Ice Events

Lexington's road system is managed through a combination of city and state responsibilities. The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government prioritizes city streets according to traffic volume while also considering access to public transportation, emergency services, and schools. The city's Rank 1 roads include major routes such as Main Street, Harrodsburg Road, and Newtown Pike. Rank 2 roads connect major routes with commercial areas, while lower-ranked roads generally serve collectors and neighborhoods.

This means a driver should not assume that every street will be equally clear after a storm. Main routes may receive treatment and repeated plowing before smaller residential streets. During an ongoing storm, even a road that was cleared earlier can quickly become covered again.

Lexington's snow plan also allows additional roads to be added when snowfall reaches five inches or more. Crews may revisit higher-priority streets during continuing snowfall or drifting, which can delay work on lower-ranked streets. Under normal mobilization, ranked streets are targeted for clearing within 24 hours after the snow event ends.

Drivers should also remember that road treatment does not guarantee bare pavement. Salt, brine, and other melting agents become less effective during extremely cold temperatures. Lexington officials have repeatedly warned motorists to expect slick spots during very cold weather, especially on bridges and overpasses.

Lexington Highways That Require Extra Winter Attention

There is no official city list declaring particular highways or intersections to be the “most dangerous” in every winter storm. Conditions depend on the storm's timing, temperature, precipitation type, traffic volume, and current road treatment. However, drivers should use additional caution on major corridors where high traffic volumes, ramps, lane changes, bridges, and merging movements can compound winter hazards.

I-64 and I-75

The interstate system carries substantial traffic through and around Lexington. At interstate interchanges, drivers encounter entrance and exit ramps that can freeze faster than ordinary pavement. KYTC specifically identifies ramps and bridges as locations where ice may form while other road surfaces remain relatively clear.

During snow or freezing rain, avoid making abrupt lane changes near interchange areas. Increase following distance before approaching an exit, and avoid hard braking while entering or leaving an icy ramp.

New Circle Road

New Circle Road is an important route around Lexington and is also part of the state-maintained network in Fayette County. Lexington officials have described city crews helping the state pretreat roads for which KYTC is responsible, including New Circle.

Because New Circle carries significant traffic and connects numerous major roads, congestion can increase quickly after crashes or spinouts. A driver should be particularly careful around ramps, overpasses, curves, and areas where traffic suddenly slows.

U.S. 25/Richmond Road and U.S. 27/Nicholasville Road

Richmond Road and Nicholasville Road are major Lexington corridors with heavy daily traffic and numerous intersections. Winter conditions can make ordinary turning and stopping problems more difficult. Vehicles approaching a signal may have reduced traction, while pedestrians and turning vehicles can be harder to see through snow or spray.

Leave additional space when approaching intersections and avoid assuming that a green traffic signal means the pavement ahead is safe. The most important factor is whether your vehicle can stop and turn under the current conditions.

Versailles Road and Leestown Road

These corridors connect Lexington with western and northwestern portions of the city and surrounding communities. Traffic can remain heavy during winter commutes, and freezing precipitation can create problems on ramps, intersections, bridges, and less-traveled connecting streets.

If conditions deteriorate, consider postponing a trip rather than assuming a major road will remain clear for the entire journey.

Which Intersections Need the Most Caution?

Instead of relying on a permanent list of “dangerous” intersections, Lexington drivers should identify intersections with several characteristics that make winter travel harder. Large signalized intersections on major corridors deserve particular attention because vehicles are constantly accelerating, braking, turning, and changing lanes.

Intersections near interstate ramps can be especially challenging because traffic may suddenly slow or merge. Large intersections along Nicholasville Road, Richmond Road, New Circle Road, Harrodsburg Road, Newtown Pike, and Versailles Road can become difficult when snow or ice reduces lane visibility and stopping traction.

Lexington provides live traffic information and cameras for major intersections, allowing motorists to check conditions before committing to a route. The city's Traffic Management Center also provides current traffic information during peak travel periods.

How Lexington and KYTC Handle Salt and Plowing

Lexington's Streets and Roads crews use pretreatment and plowing as part of the city's snow and ice plan. When a winter event is anticipated, crews can pretreat roads and strategically position plows. The city has reported using rock salt, salt brine, and Beet Heet during winter events.

KYTC handles state-maintained roads through a priority system. District 7, which includes Fayette County, has more than 60 snowplows and 91 contractors responsible for thousands of miles of roadway across the district. Crews may apply anti-icing materials before anticipated snow when conditions permit.

State routes are generally addressed according to traffic volume and access to critical needs. Higher-priority roads receive attention before lower-volume roads. During a routine storm, Kentucky's priority system establishes target turnaround times, but severe or continuing snowfall can naturally extend those timelines.

For Lexington residents, this means there is no single “salt schedule” that guarantees a particular neighborhood street will be treated at a specific hour. Crews respond according to conditions, route priority, precipitation, temperature, traffic, and available resources.

Bridges and Overpasses Freeze First

One of the most important Lexington-specific winter driving rules is to slow down before reaching bridges and overpasses. These surfaces are exposed to cold air above and below, allowing them to lose heat faster than ground-level pavement.

Lexington officials repeatedly warn that bridges and overpasses can be the first driving surfaces to become slick. This applies to interstate overpasses, major-road bridges, and smaller elevated sections.

Do not accelerate aggressively immediately before a bridge and do not brake sharply while crossing one. Enter at a controlled speed, maintain a larger following distance, and keep steering movements smooth.

Also watch for shaded pavement after the sun comes out. A road can appear wet while actually carrying a thin layer of ice, particularly early in the morning or after a rapid temperature drop.

Public Transit Alternatives During Winter Storms

When driving is unnecessary, Lextran can provide an alternative for some Lexington residents. However, winter weather can change routes, stop locations, and travel times, so passengers should check service information before leaving home.

Lextran has a specific Snow Plan. When activated, individual route pages provide snow-route information, and bus stops marked with a snowflake symbol are the stops intended to be served under the plan. Stops without the snowflake may not receive service.

Some route examples demonstrate why checking the individual route matters. Lextran's Route 4 Newtown Pike page identifies portions that may not receive service during Snow Plan conditions, while other routes list their own affected areas and alternative pickup locations.

Passengers should allow extra time because buses travel on the same winter-affected roads as other vehicles. Lextran recommends checking its website, MyStop system, social media, and local news for weather-related updates.

For people who must reach work, medical appointments, or essential services, checking bus availability before a storm can be a useful part of a backup transportation plan. Walking to a bus stop during an ice storm still requires caution, particularly around untreated sidewalks and snowbanks.

Parking Bans and Snow Emergency Rules in Lexington

Parking restrictions can directly affect how quickly Lexington crews clear snow. The city maintains designated snow emergency routes, generally consisting of major streets, and signs identify these routes.

When the mayor declares a snow emergency, parking on snow emergency routes is prohibited. Vehicles parked on those routes may be removed so that snow-removal crews and emergency responders can work more effectively. Lexington activated this restriction during the January 2026 winter storm.

Even when a snow emergency has not been declared, residents should avoid leaving vehicles along streets that crews need to treat or plow. Lexington's snow plan specifically asks residents to keep ranked roads clear of parked cars because fewer obstacles allow crews to work faster.

If a snow emergency is announced, move your vehicle before the restriction takes effect. Do not assume that an apparently passable street will remain open for parking throughout the storm.

Are Snow Tires or Tire Chains Required in Lexington?

Kentucky does not generally require ordinary passenger vehicles in Lexington to be equipped with winter tires simply because winter has arrived. Drivers should nevertheless consider the condition and type of their tires before the season begins.

Good tread depth, correct tire pressure, and properly maintained tires are especially important on snow and ice. KYTC recommends checking tread, tire pressure, brakes, antifreeze, windshield-washer fluid, defrosters, heating equipment, and the exhaust system before winter travel.

Tire chains are a different issue. Kentucky law regulates the use and construction of chains on vehicles. KRS 189.190 includes requirements concerning chained wheels and specifies dimensional limits for cross chains. It also restricts certain uses of chained wheels on highways that are not covered with ice.

For an ordinary Lexington driver, the practical lesson is not to install chains casually and assume they are always legal or appropriate. Follow Kentucky law, the vehicle manufacturer's instructions, and current road restrictions. If your vehicle is not designed for chains or the road is merely wet rather than icy, using them can create problems.

Winter or all-weather tires can be useful when a driver regularly travels during snow and freezing conditions. They should be properly sized, correctly inflated, and installed according to the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations. Four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive can help with traction when moving, but it does not eliminate the need for careful braking. A vehicle with four-wheel drive can still slide on ice.

How to Prepare Your Car Before a Lexington Storm

A winter emergency begins before the first snowflake reaches the pavement. Check your vehicle at least a day before a predicted storm rather than waiting until the roads are already hazardous.

Check tire pressure when the tires are cold.
Inspect tread and replace severely worn tires.
Test the battery, especially if it is several years old.
Check windshield-washer fluid and use winter-rated fluid when appropriate.
Make sure headlights, brake lights, and turn signals work.
Check the windshield wipers and defroster.
Keep the gas tank adequately filled during major winter events.
Carry an ice scraper, blanket, flashlight, charger, water, snacks, and basic emergency supplies.
Clear snow and ice completely from windows, mirrors, headlights, and the roof before driving.

KYTC recommends keeping an emergency kit in the vehicle and traveling only when necessary during major snow events.

What to Do If You Become Stranded

If your vehicle becomes disabled during a Lexington snowstorm, the safest option is generally to get the vehicle out of the active travel lane if you can do so safely. Kentucky's Quick Clearance Law provides guidance for crashes without visible injuries and disabled vehicles, including moving vehicles off the roadway when possible.

Turn on your hazard lights and contact appropriate assistance. If you are stuck in snow, make sure the exhaust pipe remains clear before running the engine for heat. Snow blocking the exhaust can allow carbon monoxide to accumulate inside the vehicle.

Do not repeatedly spin your tires in an attempt to escape a snowbank. Spinning can dig the tires deeper into the snow. Instead, clear snow from around the tires and underneath the vehicle where possible, and use traction material if available.

Smart Driving Habits for Lexington Winter Roads

The most useful winter driving technique is reducing speed before a problem appears. Do not wait until the vehicle starts sliding to slow down.

Leave substantially more space between your vehicle and the one ahead. KYTC notes that stopping in snow can require much more distance than normal, so following closely is particularly dangerous. Avoid cruise control because you need maximum control over acceleration and deceleration.

Approach intersections slowly. Brake before entering a curve rather than in the middle of it. Avoid sudden steering movements. If the vehicle begins to skid, ease off the accelerator and steer carefully in the direction you want the front of the vehicle to travel.

When following a snowplow, give the operator plenty of room. Plows may create clouds of snow that reduce visibility, and passing a plow on the shoulder can put both vehicles at risk. KYTC specifically advises motorists to stay well back and never pass snowplows on the shoulder.

Planning a Safer Lexington Winter Commute

The safest winter commute is often the one that has been reconsidered before leaving home. Check official weather information, city snow updates, state road conditions, and traffic cameras. If your workplace allows remote work, consider staying home when officials advise against unnecessary travel.

If you must drive, choose major treated routes where practical, but remember that even priority roads can become covered again during active snowfall. Keep your phone charged, tell someone your expected route, and carry winter emergency supplies.

Lexington's winter response system is designed to prioritize major roads, emergency access, schools, public transportation, and other critical needs. Drivers can make that system work more effectively by keeping snow emergency routes clear, avoiding unnecessary trips during severe weather, giving plows room to operate, and adjusting their driving speed to actual road conditions.

Final Thoughts

Winter driving in Lexington requires preparation because conditions can vary dramatically from one street to the next. A treated major road may be relatively clear while a neighborhood street remains snow-covered. A bridge can become icy before the road leading to it. A bus route may continue operating while some stops are removed under the Snow Plan.

The best approach is to combine local information with conservative driving habits. Check Lexington's snow updates and traffic cameras, monitor KYTC road information, understand snow emergency parking restrictions, and check Lextran's Snow Plan if public transportation is an option.

Most importantly, do not let a clear driveway or a short distance create false confidence. Winter hazards can develop quickly in Lexington, especially during freezing rain, rapid temperature drops, overnight refreezing, and periods of heavy snow. Slow down, increase following distance, watch bridges and overpasses, and postpone nonessential travel when officials advise residents to stay off the roads.

Quick Lexington Winter Driving Checklist

Check the latest weather and road conditions before leaving.
Confirm whether a winter weather or snow emergency declaration is active.
Keep your vehicle off designated snow emergency routes during a declared emergency.
Expect bridges and overpasses to freeze before many ground-level roads.
Use extra caution on I-64, I-75, New Circle Road, Richmond Road, Nicholasville Road, Versailles Road, and other major corridors.
Check city traffic cameras and road updates before your commute.
Allow extra time for KYTC and city crews to treat and plow roads.
Check Lextran's Snow Plan before relying on a bus route.
Inspect tires, brakes, battery, lights, wipers, and defroster before winter weather arrives.
Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle.
Stay well behind snowplows and never pass them on the shoulder.
If travel is not necessary during a major storm, stay home.

Lexington's roads can become challenging even during relatively short winter events, but preparation makes a significant difference. Knowing which routes receive priority, understanding how snow emergencies affect parking, recognizing why bridges freeze first, and having a transportation backup plan can help drivers make safer decisions when winter weather arrives in the Bluegrass.
