Winter driving in Lincoln, Nebraska can change quickly. A road that was merely wet at breakfast can become snow-covered, icy, or difficult to navigate by the afternoon. Wind can push snow across open stretches of pavement, temperatures can cause previously wet roads to freeze, and intersections can become especially challenging when packed snow builds up around stopping and turning areas. Drivers also have to share the road with city and Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) snowplows working to keep major routes open.

Before leaving home during a significant winter storm, check current road conditions and weather alerts rather than relying only on how the street outside your house looks. NDOT directs motorists to Nebraska 511 for current road conditions and emphasizes planning ahead, maintaining additional following distance, staying on major roads when conditions are poor, and avoiding unnecessary travel when conditions deteriorate. Never start a winter commute in Lincoln without checking whether a Lincoln winter storm warning today is active and reviewing the latest road conditions.

What Lincoln Roads Are Like During a Winter Storm

Lincoln's winter road conditions vary considerably depending on the timing, temperature, wind, and type of precipitation. Fresh snow may initially provide reasonable traction at low speeds, but compacted snow can quickly become slippery. Freezing rain presents a different problem because a thin layer of ice can form on pavement, bridges, ramps, and intersections even when the road does not look dramatically different.

Major roads generally receive attention before neighborhood streets because they carry emergency traffic, buses, school traffic, and larger volumes of vehicles. Lincoln's winter operations plan establishes different service priorities. Emergency snow routes have a higher priority than ordinary arterials, while transit and school routes are also prioritized ahead of typical residential streets. Residential streets may take substantially longer to receive full snow removal after a major event.

This difference matters for commuters. A driver may leave a residential street that is still snow-packed, reach a recently treated arterial, and then encounter another untreated side street at the destination. Do not assume that clear pavement on one portion of a trip means the entire route is safe.

Wind is another important Lincoln-specific concern. Nebraska's open terrain can allow strong winds to move loose snow back onto pavement after plows have passed. Blowing snow can also reduce visibility, particularly on less sheltered roads and highway approaches. Even after the snowfall stops, drifting can create new hazards.

Highways and Major Corridors That Deserve Extra Attention

Lincoln drivers regularly use Interstate 80, U.S. Highway 77, and major city arterials to travel across the region. These roads can remain important during storms because they connect neighborhoods, commercial areas, hospitals, schools, and communities outside Lincoln. However, their higher traffic volumes and faster speeds mean that mistakes can have serious consequences when traction is poor.

Interstate 80

I-80 is particularly important for regional travel around Lincoln. Highway speeds, merging traffic, wind, blowing snow, and sudden changes in visibility can make winter travel challenging. Interstate ramps and interchange areas deserve special attention because vehicles may be braking, accelerating, changing lanes, or entering traffic at the same time.

NDOT operates interstate and freeway winter services around the clock, although some areas can have periods without overnight plowing. Nebraska also uses tow plows and other specialized equipment on I-80 and other expressways. Drivers should never assume that because a plow has passed, the pavement is completely clear.

U.S. Highway 77 and North-South Travel

U.S. 77 is another important north-south corridor for Lincoln traffic. During storms, drivers should be particularly careful near interchanges, ramps, bridges, and locations where traffic enters the city from higher-speed sections of roadway. A vehicle traveling at highway speed needs substantially more distance to stop once snow or ice reduces tire grip.

Major Lincoln Arterials

Within Lincoln, streets such as O Street, 27th Street, 48th Street, 56th Street, 70th Street, 84th Street, and other major north-south and east-west corridors can become busy alternatives when weather disrupts normal travel patterns. These are not being presented as an official ranking of Lincoln's most dangerous winter roads; rather, they are examples of major traffic corridors where winter conditions, congestion, turning movements, and lane changes can create additional challenges.

Drivers should be particularly cautious around large signalized intersections on these corridors. Lincoln's crash analysis reports that intersections account for a substantial share of crashes, with signalized intersections experiencing more crashes than roundabouts in the city's overall crash data. Winter conditions can make those normal conflict points harder to manage because stopping distances increase and lane markings can become obscured.

Winter Intersections and Ramps Require a Different Driving Style

Intersections can remain slippery even when the approaching road looks reasonably clear. Repeated braking and acceleration can polish snow into a slick surface, while traffic can push slush toward the center of lanes. Drivers approaching a red light should begin reducing speed earlier rather than waiting until the final few car lengths.

Pay special attention to large intersections along major Lincoln corridors, including busy crossings around O Street, 27th Street, 48th Street, and other high-volume routes. Interchanges connecting city streets with I-80 and U.S. 77 also deserve caution because drivers may be dealing with lane changes and merging traffic while simultaneously navigating snow or ice.

Do not use another driver's speed as proof that the road is safe. A vehicle with different tires, weight distribution, or electronic traction systems may behave differently from yours. Leave substantially more space ahead and avoid abrupt steering, braking, or acceleration.

Why Bridges Can Freeze Before Other Roads

Bridges are among the first places drivers should think about when temperatures approach freezing. Unlike pavement resting on the ground, a bridge deck is exposed to cold air above and below. That allows it to lose heat more quickly. Moisture can therefore freeze on a bridge even when nearby pavement appears merely wet.

Lincoln motorists should be alert on bridge decks along major roads, highway interchanges, and crossings over local waterways. The important lesson is not to memorize a single bridge but to recognize the pattern: whenever a route rises onto a bridge, reduce speed and avoid sudden movements.

NDOT specifically warns motorists about icy spots on bridges and in sheltered areas. The agency also notes that it may pretreat bridges and stop-sign locations with liquid deicer before a storm, while additional solid or liquid deicers can be applied as conditions warrant.

Black ice can be particularly deceptive. It may look like ordinary wet pavement, leaving the driver unaware of the loss of traction until the vehicle begins to slide. Bridges, shaded sections, ramps, and areas where water drains across pavement deserve extra caution.

How Lincoln's Snowplowing and Deicing Works

Lincoln does not operate on a simple rule such as "every road gets plowed at a particular hour." Winter operations depend on snow depth, storm duration, temperature, traffic conditions, available crews, and the priority assigned to a particular street.

The city's winter operations plan establishes service targets for different road categories. Emergency snow routes have a six-hour target once snow accumulation exceeds one inch, while other arterials have a nine-hour target after more than two inches. Transit routes and school routes have additional priorities, and residential streets are handled as conditions and resources allow, with a stated 48-hour standard in the plan. These are operational standards rather than promises that every road will always be completely bare within those exact periods.

During significant storms, Lincoln crews may work continuously. Before a January 2025 storm, city officials said crews would plow around the clock if necessary and had applied brine pretreatment to arterial streets. During active storms, emergency, school, and bus routes receive priority.

Lincoln also uses a Snowplow Tracker and Residential Snowplow Tracker so residents can monitor progress. The city advises residents to wait until priority streets have been serviced before making residential snow-removal requests.

Salt, Brine, and Why a Treated Road Can Still Be Slippery

Winter treatment does not mean pavement will instantly become dry and completely ice-free. Lincoln uses granular salt, brine mixtures, and other treatments depending on weather conditions and location. In February 2026, city winter operations crews were reported plowing arterial routes while applying granular salt pre-wet with brine.

Extremely low temperatures can also reduce the effectiveness of traditional deicing materials. Lincoln has previously explained that rock salt alone is most effective above roughly 15 degrees Fahrenheit, while brine use depends on factors such as temperature, wind chill, time of day, and sunlight. The city does not apply brine and granular salt to every residential street.

For drivers, this means a road that has been treated can still contain slick areas. Treat salt as a tool that helps crews manage ice, not as a guarantee of normal traction.

How to Drive Around Lincoln Snowplows

Snowplows deserve plenty of room. NDOT says plows commonly travel around 25 to 30 mph or less and warns that rear-end collisions involving plows are a common crash type. Drivers should slow down when approaching a plow, stay well behind it, and avoid passing in a cloud of blowing snow.

Never pass a snowplow on the right. Some plows have wing extensions that can extend well beyond the visible truck. On multilane roads, a plow may also be positioned in a lane that drivers do not expect.

Lincoln's city plows need room to work too. Avoid driving directly beside a plow whenever possible, and remember that the snow being pushed from the blade can temporarily cover a lane or driveway entrance.

StarTran and Other Alternatives During Storms

When road conditions are poor, Lincoln residents do not always need to rely on a private vehicle. StarTran operates city bus routes serving areas throughout Lincoln, including routes connecting downtown, neighborhoods, medical facilities, shopping areas, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln area. The system also provides route information and real-time bus tracking through RideLNK.

Public transit can be useful when parking bans are active or when a driver is uncomfortable operating on snow-covered streets. However, winter weather can also cause delays and route changes. Check current StarTran information before leaving, rather than assuming the normal schedule will remain unchanged during a major storm.

For eligible riders with disabilities, StarTran's paratransit service provides another transportation option. During inclement weather, StarTran notes that operators assess whether snow and ice create unsafe conditions and that sidewalks, steps, driveways, and wheelchair ramps need to be cleared.

Lincoln Snow Emergency and Parking Rules

Winter parking rules are important because a vehicle left in the wrong location can interfere with plowing and emergency access. Lincoln uses several types of parking bans when substantial snow removal is necessary.

During a Snow Emergency Parking Ban, parking can be prohibited on both sides of emergency snow routes, arterial streets, school routes, and bus routes. Snow removal districts have their own restrictions, and residential parking bans can prohibit parking on one side of qualifying residential streets.

Lincoln's snow removal districts include areas such as Downtown, University Place, Havelock, Bethany, College View, 11th and G, 17th and Washington, and 25th and Sumner. In these districts, snow can be moved into windrows, loaded into trucks, and hauled away, with snow removal typically occurring between midnight and 8 a.m.

Parking restrictions can change from one storm to another, so residents should check the city's current winter operations announcements rather than relying on an old notice. Vehicles parked in violation can face fines, towing, and storage costs.

Lincoln's recent 2026 winter operations notices demonstrate how quickly these rules can become active. During the February 2026 storm, the city declared a Snow Emergency and banned parking on both sides of emergency snow routes, arterial streets, school and bus routes, while the residential ban applied to even-numbered sides of qualifying residential streets.

Are Snow Tires or Tire Chains Required in Lincoln?

Nebraska does not require every passenger vehicle to have winter tires simply because winter has arrived. However, tire choice can make a significant difference on snow and ice. Drivers should inspect tread depth, tire pressure, tire age, and overall condition before the season begins. Cold temperatures reduce tire pressure, so checking pressure regularly is especially important.

NDOT states that tire chains of reasonable proportions may be used on vehicles when required for safety because of snow, ice, or other conditions that tend to cause sliding or skidding. Nebraska also permits studded snow tires from November 1 through April 1. School buses, emergency vehicles, and mail carrier vehicles have an exception allowing studded tires throughout the year.

Even when chains are legally permissible, drivers should understand their vehicle manufacturer's recommendations and use them appropriately. Chains are not a substitute for careful speed selection. They can also be inappropriate on pavement that is mostly clear.

For ordinary Lincoln winter commuting, properly maintained all-season tires may be adequate for some drivers and conditions, while dedicated winter tires can provide additional traction in snow and cold weather. Front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, or four-wheel drive can help a vehicle move through snow, but none eliminates the need for appropriate tires and cautious braking.

A Safer Lincoln Winter Commute

The safest winter driving strategy starts before the vehicle leaves the driveway. Check the forecast, road conditions, traffic, and city winter operations information. Clear snow and ice completely from the windshield, side windows, mirrors, roof, hood, headlights, and taillights. Snow left on a vehicle can blow onto other motorists or fall onto your own windshield while driving.

Keep at least half a tank of fuel during periods of severe winter weather, and carry a basic emergency kit with a flashlight, warm clothing or blankets, phone charger, shovel, ice scraper, and other useful supplies. NDOT also recommends allowing additional travel time, informing someone of your route, and keeping a vehicle survival kit available.

On the road, slow down before curves, intersections, ramps, bridges, and stops. Increase following distance substantially. Avoid cruise control on slippery roads because maintaining control manually gives you more immediate ability to respond to changing traction.

If traffic stops during a storm, avoid abandoning your vehicle unless emergency officials tell you to leave. A stranded vehicle can provide shelter from wind and cold. If you must stop on the roadside, use emergency flashers and make sure the exhaust pipe remains clear of snow. NDOT recommends running the engine sparingly and maintaining fresh air to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide accumulation.

When It Is Better to Delay the Trip

Not every trip needs to happen during a winter storm. If officials are warning about dangerous travel conditions, visibility is rapidly deteriorating, or roads are becoming covered faster than crews can clear them, delaying a trip can prevent a difficult situation from becoming an emergency.

Lincoln's winter traffic enforcement has specifically focused on behaviors that contribute to winter crashes, including speeding, driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, and failing to yield at intersections. The Lincoln Police Department's 2025–2026 winter safety project ran from December 4, 2025, through March 31, 2026, reflecting the city's emphasis on cautious driving during the winter season.

Remember that a posted speed limit is not a requirement to travel at that speed when conditions are hazardous. Safe speed depends on visibility, traction, traffic, road surface, vehicle condition, and the ability to stop safely.

Use properly maintained tires and check tire pressure regularly.
Know Nebraska's rules concerning tire chains and studded snow tires.
Keep an emergency kit, warm clothing, and adequate fuel in the vehicle.
If conditions become unsafe, find a safe place to stop rather than continuing simply to reach your destination on schedule.

Winter driving in Lincoln is manageable when motorists understand how quickly conditions can change and how city and state crews prioritize snow removal. The biggest advantage is preparation: knowing which routes are likely to be treated first, recognizing that bridges and intersections can remain slippery, watching for parking restrictions, giving plows plenty of space, and checking current road conditions before every serious winter trip.

A clear road is not necessarily a safe road, and a snow-covered road is not necessarily impassable. The difference often comes down to temperature, traction, visibility, traffic, and driver behavior. By slowing down, planning ahead, using appropriate tires, and respecting Lincoln's winter operations, motorists can reduce the risks associated with snow, ice, and freezing temperatures throughout the Lincoln area.
