Winter driving in Missoula, Montana requires more preparation than simply putting snow tires on the car. Snow can arrive quickly in the Missoula Valley, temperatures can drop sharply after sunset, and roads that look merely wet can develop a thin layer of ice. Mountain routes surrounding the city can become even more challenging when snow, wind, drifting, reduced visibility, and steep grades occur together.

Before leaving home, drivers should check the forecast and current highway information rather than relying only on what conditions look like from the driveway. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) recommends checking Montana 511 before traveling because it provides road conditions, incidents, closures, restrictions, cameras, weather information, and other traveler information. Winter road reports are generally updated at least twice daily during the November-through-April reporting season, with additional updates when major changes occur. Conditions can still change faster than a report can be updated. Missoula winter storm warning today should also be checked before a storm commute so drivers know whether conditions may deteriorate during the trip.

What Missoula Roads Are Like During a Winter Storm

Missoula's winter road conditions can vary considerably from one part of the city to another. A major arterial may have been plowed and treated while a neighborhood street remains packed with snow. Roads outside the city can present another set of challenges because responsibility changes between the City of Missoula, Missoula County and MDT.

Within the city, crews generally begin plowing when approximately two inches of snow has accumulated on streets. Priority 1 routes include arterial roads, school bus routes and transit bus routes, while Priority 2 routes include collector streets, fire routes, Neighborhood Greenways and some steeper local roads. The city's stated goal is to clear and deice Priority 1 routes within 48 hours after snowfall stops and Priority 2 routes within 96 hours, although storm duration and snowfall totals can affect those timelines.

That does not mean every road will be clear immediately after snow begins. During an active storm, snow can accumulate faster than crews can remove it. Drivers should expect compacted snow, slush, ruts, reduced lane width, snow berms and limited visibility. At intersections, repeated braking and acceleration can polish snow into slippery surfaces.

Missoula County handles roads outside city limits and says its crews generally begin weekday snowplowing between 5 and 6 a.m. after a storm. Priority routes include school and city bus routes, school-area roads, high-traffic routes and roads with hills or curves. MDT, meanwhile, maintains major state highways such as U.S. 93, I-90, Highway 200 and Highway 10.

Major Highways to Watch Around Missoula

Some of the most important winter routes in and around Missoula are U.S. 93, Interstate 90, U.S. 12, Montana 200 and other state-maintained roads connecting the city with surrounding communities and mountain passes.

U.S. 93

U.S. 93 is a major north-south travel corridor through the Missoula area. Traffic volume, highway speeds and changing weather can make winter incidents particularly disruptive. Drivers heading north or south should check MDT information before starting a longer trip because conditions outside the city can be substantially different from those in the valley.

The U.S. 93 corridor also includes the Evaro area north of Missoula, where MDT identifies an area where chains may be required for northbound traffic under qualifying conditions. Chain requirements are activated through posted signs and official restrictions; drivers should never assume that four-wheel drive automatically eliminates every requirement.

Interstate 90

I-90 is one of the region's principal east-west routes. Although interstate highways receive high maintenance priority, winter storms can still create snow-covered lanes, blowing snow, reduced visibility, crashes and traffic backups.

Lookout Pass on I-90 near the Idaho line is a particularly important consideration for drivers traveling west from Missoula. MDT lists a designated chain-requirement location on I-90 at the Idaho line area. Mountain weather can also be very different from conditions in downtown Missoula, so a clear-looking city departure does not guarantee a clear trip farther west.

U.S. 12 and Lolo Pass

Travel toward Lolo Pass deserves extra caution. The route climbs away from the Missoula Valley and can experience significantly different snow and ice conditions. MDT lists U.S. 12 at Lolo Pass as a location where chains may be required in designated circumstances. Drivers planning a trip toward Idaho should check current restrictions before departure and again before entering the mountain section.

Montana Highway 200

Highway 200 is another important regional route, particularly for people traveling east of Missoula. Conditions can change quickly as the road moves away from the urban area into more rural terrain. Winter travelers should leave additional time, keep fuel levels comfortably above empty and check 511 before departure.

Intersections and Locations That Deserve Extra Attention

It is difficult to identify a single list of “most dangerous” Missoula intersections because winter crash risk changes with weather, traffic volume, road treatment and the specific storm. Instead, drivers should pay special attention to high-volume corridors, major intersections, bridge approaches and locations where traffic must stop or turn on compacted snow.

Reserve Street is particularly important because it is a major north-south commercial corridor and connects with I-90 and other heavily traveled streets. Intersections around Reserve Street can become difficult when snow narrows lanes and vehicles are braking repeatedly. The Reserve Street and South Avenue area is also specifically identified in city snow-removal procedures for pedestrian ramp work after heavy accumulation, illustrating the importance of snow management around major crossings.

Other locations requiring caution include Broadway and Higgins Avenue, approaches to downtown bridges, South Avenue, Clements Road, Grant Creek Road and Big Flat Road. Missoula County notes that liquid deicer is specifically used on higher-traffic roads such as South Avenue and Clements Road and on some roads where hills and curves combine with moderate or high traffic volumes.

The safest approach is to reduce speed before reaching an intersection rather than braking aggressively after entering it. Leave extra space behind vehicles, anticipate that a car ahead may slide through a stop and avoid sudden steering movements.

Why Bridges Freeze Before Many Other Road Sections

Bridge decks deserve special attention during Missoula winters. A bridge can freeze before the surrounding roadway because cold air circulates above and below the deck. That allows the pavement surface to lose heat more quickly than a road built directly on the ground.

MDT specifically advises drivers to expect ice on bridges and in shady areas. A road may therefore appear wet and manageable before a bridge approach and suddenly become slick across the bridge deck.

Drivers should reduce speed before reaching a bridge, avoid hard braking while crossing it and leave more space between vehicles. This is especially important during early morning commutes, after sunset and during periods when daytime melting is followed by nighttime freezing.

Bridge approaches can also become slippery because snowplows push snow toward the edges of travel lanes. A vehicle moving from a clear lane into a snow berm can lose traction unexpectedly. Keep both hands available for steering and avoid unnecessary lane changes.

How Missoula and Montana Crews Plow and Treat Roads

There is no single citywide “plow time” when every road will be cleared. Snow removal happens according to priority, storm severity, available equipment and whether snowfall is continuing.

Inside Missoula, the city says Street Division crews plow and apply deicer and sand around the clock during the heart of winter. Crews begin when approximately two inches of snow accumulates. Priority 1 routes receive attention first, followed by Priority 2 routes and then additional local-street work. Residential plowing normally takes place during daytime weekday hours, while severe weekend events can trigger additional work.

Missoula County uses a different schedule outside city limits. Its weekday crews generally start between 5 and 6 a.m. after a storm, beginning with Priority 1 routes. Weekend and overnight work can depend on operational needs and available resources.

MDT also does not simply wait until snow has accumulated before acting. The department may use anti-icing treatments before or during the early stages of a storm. During a storm, interstates and roads with higher traffic volumes receive priority, although widespread storms can stretch available resources. MDT may temporarily close roads when conditions become too hazardous or when resources are needed elsewhere.

Salt, Sand and Deicer: What Drivers Should Expect

Missoula County does not rely exclusively on conventional road salt. County Public Works says pure salt is never used for deicing roads; instead, salt is mixed with sand, and liquid deicer can also be used. A magnesium-chloride-based solution may be applied on selected higher-traffic or challenging roads.

MDT similarly uses different treatments depending on conditions and temperatures. Magnesium chloride and sodium chloride can help prevent or remove ice, while sand is used primarily for traction. MDT notes that chemical effectiveness decreases at lower pavement temperatures, making sand particularly useful during extended periods of extreme cold.

This means a road may not look completely bare after a storm even when crews have already treated it. Drivers should not interpret visible snow or sand as proof that maintenance crews have not worked on the road. Winter maintenance is intended to improve traction and mobility while snowfall and freezing conditions continue.

Public Transit Can Be a Useful Alternative

When roads are hazardous, one way to reduce personal exposure to winter driving is to use public transportation when practical. Mountain Line provides fare-free bus service throughout Missoula, including regular routes connecting areas such as the University of Montana, downtown, Midtown, Southgate Mall, Fort Missoula, Rattlesnake, Northside, Bonner and the airport.

Transit can be especially useful when the main problem is finding a safe parking space, dealing with downtown snow or navigating slippery residential streets. However, buses operate on the same winter road network as other vehicles, so riders should check current rider alerts and schedules before leaving.

Mountain Line also provides Paratransit services, and current route information is available online and through the Transit app. Because routes and schedules can change, travelers should verify the route before a storm rather than relying on an old printed timetable.

If you normally drive, consider identifying a bus route near home and work before winter becomes severe. Having an alternative ready is much easier than trying to figure out transportation after a vehicle becomes stuck or a road is temporarily closed.

Parking Restrictions During Snow Emergencies

Parking can directly affect how quickly Missoula streets are cleared. A vehicle parked along a snow route can obstruct plows, force equipment around it and leave a large mound of snow in the travel lane.

Missoula municipal rules allow the mayor to establish emergency parking prohibitions for snowplowing, snow removal or other emergencies. When such a prohibition is declared, it must be publicly announced and does not take effect until at least eight hours after public notice.

Drivers should therefore watch official city announcements during major storms rather than assuming normal parking rules will continue unchanged. If an emergency parking restriction is announced, move the vehicle within the required period and avoid leaving cars on designated streets where they can interfere with snow operations.

Even without an emergency parking prohibition, choosing off-street parking during a significant storm can help crews work more efficiently. It also reduces the possibility of a parked vehicle becoming buried behind a snow berm.

Snow Tires, All-Season Tires and Chains

Good tires are one of the most important parts of a Missoula winter-driving setup. MDT recommends checking all four tires and preparing vehicles before winter. Drivers should not wait until the first major storm to discover that tread is worn or tire pressure is incorrect.

Montana permits studded winter tires from October 1 through May 31 of the following year for regular vehicles. School buses have a longer permitted period.

Chains are different. Montana law allows MDT to require tire chains or approved traction equipment when dangerous conditions exist on designated highways. Signs indicate when chain requirements are active. MDT specifically lists several locations relevant to western Montana travel, including Lolo Pass on U.S. 12 and Evaro Hill on U.S. 93. AutoSock is also recognized as an approved alternative to tire chains under the applicable rules.

Drivers should understand that having four-wheel drive does not mean the vehicle can stop quickly on ice. Four-wheel drive can help a vehicle accelerate and maintain movement, but braking and cornering still depend on tire traction and road conditions.

What to Keep in Your Vehicle

A winter emergency kit is worthwhile even for short Missoula trips. Include a warm blanket or sleeping bag, winter clothing, gloves, a flashlight, extra food and water, a phone charger, basic first-aid supplies and an ice scraper. Keep the fuel tank reasonably full, particularly when a major storm is forecast.

Before driving, clear snow and ice completely from windows, mirrors, headlights, taillights and the roof. Snow blowing from a roof can obstruct your own view or create a hazard for another driver. Montana emergency guidance also recommends ensuring the exhaust pipe is clear if a vehicle becomes stranded.

How to Drive Behind a Snowplow

Snowplows can create a tempting illusion that the road ahead is completely clear. In reality, the roadway immediately in front of a plow is often the portion crews are actively treating.

Slow down when approaching a plow, stay well behind it and avoid driving into the snow cloud. MDT warns that another plow may be operating nearby and hidden by blowing snow. Passing can also put a driver beside an extended wing plow or into deeper snow.

Never follow so closely that you cannot react if the plow slows, turns or stops. Give oncoming plows plenty of room as well, especially on narrow roads where snow has reduced the usable pavement.

A Safer Missoula Winter Commute

The most effective winter-driving strategy is to make decisions before entering hazardous conditions. Check the weather and Montana 511, identify alternate routes, allow additional travel time and consider Mountain Line when driving conditions are poor. Remember that conditions can change between Missoula and nearby mountain routes, so a clear downtown road does not necessarily mean the highway ahead is clear.

Once on the road, slow down, increase following distance and make smooth steering, braking and acceleration inputs. Treat bridges, shaded areas, intersections and hills as potential trouble spots. Keep an eye out for snowplows and never drive around a road-closure barricade.

Winter maintenance crews work according to established priorities, but no plowing system can eliminate every hazard while snow is actively falling. Missoula drivers who understand the local road network, parking rules, maintenance schedules, transit options and Montana traction requirements can make better-informed decisions before each winter trip.

Most importantly, if conditions become severe enough that travel is unnecessary, postponing the trip can be the safest choice. A few extra hours at home is preferable to becoming stranded on an icy road, blocked behind a collision or caught in rapidly deteriorating mountain weather.
