Winter driving in New Orleans is different from winter driving in cities that regularly deal with deep snow. The biggest threat is often not a large accumulation of snow, but a thin layer of ice, freezing rain, sleet, or slush that develops quickly when temperatures fall below freezing. Because the city has relatively little winter road-treatment equipment compared with northern metropolitan areas, a storm that would be routine elsewhere can create major transportation problems across the New Orleans area.

New Orleans' own emergency-planning information describes severe winter weather as relatively rare but potentially highly disruptive. Bridges, overpasses, elevated highways, and other exposed surfaces can become hazardous before ordinary streets do. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0} That means drivers need to think differently about winter safety: checking conditions before leaving, identifying alternate routes, allowing extra time, and knowing when staying home is safer than attempting a short trip.

Never begin a winter commute without checking whether a New Orleans winter storm warning today is active. A warning or significant ice forecast can change road conditions dramatically within a few hours, particularly overnight and during the early morning when temperatures are lowest.

Why Winter Roads in New Orleans Can Become Dangerous So Quickly

New Orleans normally has mild winters, so drivers may not expect the road hazards associated with freezing weather. The city generally sees far more rain than snow during winter. When that rain encounters pavement at or below freezing, however, the result can be freezing rain and glaze ice.

NOLA Ready notes that severe winter weather in the city can involve freezing temperatures, freezing rain, sleet, and occasionally snow. The city's hazard planning also points out that even relatively small amounts of ice can make roads extremely dangerous. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

This creates several distinct driving hazards:

Black ice: A transparent layer of ice can be extremely difficult to see.
Freezing rain: Rain can freeze on pavement, bridges, vehicles, and traffic signals.
Snow and slush: Even modest snowfall can create problems because local drivers and equipment are less accustomed to snow-covered roads.
Reduced visibility: Heavy precipitation, fog, and spray from other vehicles can make lane markings difficult to see.
Falling branches: Ice accumulation on trees can create obstacles and block roads.
Power outages: A major freeze can knock out signals or lighting, creating additional hazards at intersections.

Drivers should therefore avoid assuming that a road is safe simply because it appears wet rather than icy. The most dangerous condition may be a nearly invisible coating that forms after rainfall.

Which New Orleans Roads and Highways Require Extra Winter Caution?

There is no permanent list of intersections that are officially designated as the “most dangerous” during every winter storm. Conditions depend on temperature, precipitation, traffic volume, road elevation, wind, and whether crews have treated a particular location. However, several major corridors deserve particular attention because of their traffic volume, elevated structures, bridge crossings, or connections between different parts of the metropolitan area.

I-10 and the East Highrise

Interstate 10 is one of the most important transportation corridors in New Orleans and carries a very large volume of traffic. The city's emergency planning identifies I-10 as the primary east-west transportation route through the region. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}

During freezing weather, elevated portions of I-10 deserve special caution. The East Highrise and other elevated sections can lose heat faster than ground-level pavement. A driver may encounter apparently normal pavement on one section of the interstate and substantially different traction after reaching an elevated structure.

When ice is possible, avoid sudden braking, rapid acceleration, and unnecessary lane changes. Increase following distance well before reaching elevated portions of the interstate.

I-10 Twin Span

The I-10 Twin Span across Lake Pontchartrain is another location where winter conditions can become particularly challenging. The bridge is exposed to wind, open water, and cold air, and its elevated roadway can freeze before nearby ground-level roads.

DOTD specifically identifies bridges and overpasses as surfaces that can freeze first. During the January 2026 winter event, DOTD crews pretreated bridges and overpasses throughout the New Orleans and Northshore area and specifically monitored routes including I-10. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}

If freezing temperatures are forecast, drivers should check the current condition of the Twin Span before attempting a cross-lake trip. A bridge that is technically open may still require substantially slower driving.

Crescent City Connection

The Crescent City Connection is another major elevated route that deserves attention during icy conditions. It connects the east and west sides of the Mississippi River and is an important part of the regional transportation network.

The city's response during a major winter storm has previously prioritized the Crescent City Connection for snowplowing, demonstrating how important the bridge is to maintaining movement through New Orleans. :contentReference[oaicite:4]{index=4}

Because the bridge is elevated and exposed, drivers should treat it differently from an ordinary city street. Reduce speed before entering the bridge rather than waiting until the vehicle begins sliding.

I-610 and Elevated Interchanges

I-610 provides another important east-west route through New Orleans. During severe winter weather, ramps, overpasses, and elevated connections can be more problematic than straight sections of pavement.

Interchange areas also create additional risk because vehicles are changing lanes, merging, braking, and turning. A driver who loses traction while entering or exiting an icy ramp may have very little room for recovery.

Claiborne Avenue and Other Major Corridors

Major surface routes such as Claiborne Avenue, Carrollton Avenue, Tulane Avenue, St. Claude Avenue, Elysian Fields Avenue, and Chef Menteur Highway can become important alternatives when interstate sections are closed or restricted.

During a major New Orleans winter storm, city snowplowing operations have prioritized numerous major corridors, including Claiborne, Carrollton, Napoleon, Earhart, Tulane, MLK, St. Bernard, St. Claude, Elysian Fields, Chef Menteur, and several New Orleans East roads. :contentReference[oaicite:5]{index=5}

However, a plowed road is not automatically a completely safe road. Ice can remain after snow or slush has been removed, especially where temperatures stay below freezing.

Which Bridges Freeze First in New Orleans?

Bridges and overpasses are among the most important winter-driving hazards in southeast Louisiana. Ground-level pavement can retain heat from the earth underneath it, while a bridge deck is exposed to cold air from above and below.

DOTD explicitly warned during the January 2026 freeze that bridges and overpasses are typically among the first surfaces to freeze. Crews pretreated priority routes and planned to reapply salt as conditions required. :contentReference[oaicite:6]{index=6}

In the greater New Orleans area, drivers should pay particular attention to:

I-10 Twin Span
Crescent City Connection
Elevated portions of I-10
I-610 elevated sections and ramps
US 90 and other elevated highway sections
Smaller bridges over canals and waterways
Bridge approaches and exit ramps

The important point is that a bridge can be icy even when the street immediately before it appears merely wet.

How New Orleans DOTD Salt and Plow Operations Work

Drivers should not expect a fixed daily winter plowing schedule comparable to what is common in northern cities. New Orleans winter operations are event-driven because significant snow and ice are relatively uncommon.

During a January 2026 freezing event, DOTD crews in the New Orleans and Northshore areas began pretreating bridges and overpasses before hazardous icing developed. Priority routes included US 90, US 61, LA 3152, US 190, LA 21, LA 22, I-10, I-55, and I-12. DOTD said crews would continue working overnight and reapply salt as needed according to roadway conditions. :contentReference[oaicite:7]{index=7}

This means drivers should not interpret the absence of visible salt trucks as proof that no treatment is occurring. Crews may be treating specific bridges and priority routes rather than every neighborhood street.

The city can also deploy its own snowplows during unusually severe events. During a significant winter storm, New Orleans deployed 14 snowplows, beginning with the Crescent City Connection and then moving to other critical routes. :contentReference[oaicite:8]{index=8}

Road priorities can change as conditions develop. For the latest route status, drivers should use Louisiana's 511 traveler information system and monitor current DOTD announcements rather than relying on a previous storm's schedule.

How to Drive Safely on Icy New Orleans Streets

The safest winter-driving technique is simple: reduce speed and increase space.

Leave considerably more following distance than normal. If the vehicle ahead brakes suddenly, an icy surface can make ordinary stopping distances dramatically longer.

Do not make abrupt steering movements. If the vehicle begins to slide, avoid the instinct to jerk the steering wheel or slam on the brakes. Smooth steering and controlled braking give the tires a better chance to regain traction.

Drivers should also use headlights whenever visibility is reduced. Clear all ice and snow from the windshield, mirrors, windows, roof, and lights before leaving. Do not depend on the windshield defroster alone to clear heavy accumulation while driving.

Intersections require special care. Vehicles frequently stop and accelerate at intersections, which can polish ice into a slick surface. Turning lanes and ramps can also hold water that freezes overnight.

Public Transit Alternatives During Winter Storms

When roads become dangerous, public transportation can sometimes reduce the need to drive. The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority operates buses and streetcars throughout the city, with routes connecting neighborhoods, the CBD, and other destinations.

RTA's winter service information notes that freezing temperatures can produce delays because operators must prioritize safety, and the agency advises riders to allow extra travel time and check for updates before traveling. :contentReference[oaicite:9]{index=9}

Available services can include bus and streetcar routes, depending on the conditions and any temporary storm-related suspensions. RTA's service-change information provides current route and schedule information, including winter adjustments. :contentReference[oaicite:10]{index=10}

During a severe storm, never assume that public transit will operate normally. Check the RTA service status before leaving home. If a route is running, transit may be a useful alternative to driving on untreated neighborhood roads, but delays and cancellations remain possible.

Parking Bans and Snow Emergency Rules in New Orleans

New Orleans does not operate under the same routine snow-emergency parking system found in cities that receive heavy snow every winter. Because major snow events are unusual, parking restrictions can be associated with a particular emergency, storm response, road closure, or official city order rather than a standard seasonal snow route.

Drivers should therefore pay attention to temporary signs, barricades, emergency announcements, and instructions from city officials during a winter storm. Do not move barricades or attempt to drive around a road closure. During previous winter emergencies, NOPD specifically instructed residents not to bypass barricades because roads were closed for safety reasons. :contentReference[oaicite:11]{index=11}

Parking on a roadway can also interfere with snowplows and emergency vehicles. If the city announces a temporary parking restriction for a storm, move the vehicle before the restriction begins rather than waiting for crews to arrive.

Louisiana law also restricts leaving unattended vehicles on state highway shoulders except in specified circumstances, including emergencies. :contentReference[oaicite:12]{index=12} If your vehicle becomes disabled, move as far from moving traffic as safely possible and contact appropriate assistance.

Are Tire Chains or Snow Tires Required in New Orleans?

New Orleans does not have a routine winter-tire requirement comparable to states where snow and mountain conditions are common. Louisiana law, however, specifically permits tire chains of reasonable proportions when safety conditions require them because of conditions that could cause a vehicle to slide or skid. :contentReference[oaicite:13]{index=13}

That does not mean drivers should automatically install chains whenever temperatures approach freezing. Chains can damage pavement when used improperly, and they can be unnecessary on ordinary wet roads.

For New Orleans drivers, good-quality tires with adequate tread and correct inflation are generally much more practical preparation for occasional winter weather. Drivers who regularly travel outside southeast Louisiana into areas with heavier snow should check the requirements for the specific states and routes they plan to use.

Louisiana's general driving law also requires motorists to operate at a speed that is reasonable and prudent for existing weather and roadway conditions. :contentReference[oaicite:14]{index=14} Therefore, simply having appropriate tires does not make high-speed driving on an icy road safe.

What to Keep in Your Vehicle Before a Freeze

Because a winter event can cause unexpected closures, every New Orleans driver should consider keeping a small emergency kit in the vehicle.

Phone charger or power bank
Flashlight with spare batteries
Blanket or warm clothing
Water and shelf-stable snacks
First-aid supplies
Reflective warning device
Ice scraper
Gloves
Basic tire-inflation equipment
Jumper cables or a portable jump starter

Before leaving, check fuel or battery range, tire pressure, windshield-wiper condition, headlights, brakes, and the vehicle's heating system. A short trip can become a long wait if a bridge closes or traffic is stopped by an accident.

When Should You Stay Home?

The most important winter-driving decision may be deciding not to drive.

If freezing rain is actively falling, multiple bridges are closed, authorities are advising against unnecessary travel, or your route includes untreated elevated roads, postponing the trip can be safer than attempting it.

New Orleans has experienced winter events in which bridges, overpasses, and elevated roads became impassable because of ice. The city's emergency-planning documentation describes the 2014 winter event as producing especially hazardous conditions on bridges, overpasses, and other elevated roadways. :contentReference[oaicite:15]{index=15}

Remember that road conditions can deteriorate after you leave. A road that was passable at 6 p.m. may become icy after sunset. If temperatures are falling and precipitation continues, waiting for crews to treat and inspect the roads may be the safer choice.

Plan Before Every Winter Drive in New Orleans

Winter driving in New Orleans is mainly a problem of ice, elevated roadways, sudden temperature changes, and limited local experience with snow. The best strategy is preparation rather than trying to adapt after a vehicle starts sliding.

Check the weather before leaving. Check Louisiana 511 for road closures and traffic conditions. Check RTA if public transportation is an option. Pay special attention to bridges, overpasses, ramps, and major interchanges. Reduce speed and increase following distance whenever freezing conditions are possible.

Most importantly, remember that New Orleans winter storms can produce disproportionately serious transportation problems even when the amount of snow or ice appears small. A thin coating on a bridge can be more dangerous than several inches of snow on a road where drivers and transportation crews are accustomed to winter conditions.

With advance planning, properly maintained tires, extra travel time, and a willingness to postpone unnecessary trips, drivers can greatly reduce the risks associated with winter weather in New Orleans.
