When we need access to money held in a workplace retirement account, a Fidelity 401(k) withdrawal may be one of the available options. However, the exact choices depend on the rules of the employer-sponsored 401(k) plan, the participant's employment status, age, account balance, and the type of distribution being requested. Fidelity administers many workplace retirement plans, but the employer's plan document determines which loans, withdrawals, hardship distributions, and other features are actually available. Fidelity states that participants can review available options through NetBenefits when their plan is administered by Fidelity.

Fidelity 401k Withdrawal: What Are the Main Options?

A Fidelity 401k withdrawal generally means taking money permanently out of a workplace retirement account. Depending on the plan, we may encounter several different ways to access retirement funds, including a regular withdrawal, hardship withdrawal, and rollover after leaving employment, or a 401(k) loan.

A withdrawal is different from a loan. With a withdrawal, the money generally does not have to be returned to the account. With a 401(k) loan, eligible participants borrow against their vested account balance and repay the borrowed amount, generally with interest, according to the plan's repayment schedule. Fidelity explains that not every employer-sponsored plan offers loans, and plan-specific rules determine availability.

Fidelity Investments 401k Withdrawal Rules and Terms

The Fidelity Investments terms of withdrawal 401k participants see are primarily based on the rules of their particular employer's retirement plan and applicable federal tax regulations. This means two people who have Fidelity 401(k) accounts can have different withdrawal options.

Before requesting a distribution, we should check the plan's rules for eligibility, minimum withdrawal amounts, available sources of money, tax withholding, documentation requirements, repayment provisions, and restrictions that may apply after a distribution.

For an active employee, access to money can be more restricted than it is after leaving an employer. Some plans permit certain in-service withdrawals, while others limit distributions until a specified event occurs. Fidelity recommends reviewing the available options through NetBenefits or contacting the employer's plan administrator.

How to Withdraw Money from a Fidelity 401k?

For a Fidelity-administered workplace plan, we can generally begin by signing in to Fidelity NetBenefits and reviewing the retirement account. The available withdrawal or loan options should reflect the rules of the specific plan.

A typical process may include:

Sign in to the Fidelity NetBenefits account.
Select the applicable workplace retirement account.
Review the available withdrawal and loan options.
Check eligibility requirements and applicable tax information.
Select the desired distribution type, if available.
Enter the requested amount and required information.
Review tax withholding and delivery details.
Submit the request and retain the confirmation.

The actual screens, available options, processing time, and required documentation can differ from one employer plan to another.

Fidelity 401k Cash Out: What Does It Mean?

A Fidelity 401k cash out generally refers to taking retirement funds as a cash distribution instead of keeping the money invested in a retirement account or moving it into another eligible retirement account.

Cash-outs can have significant tax consequences. A traditional 401(k) distribution is generally included in taxable income, and an additional 10% early-distribution tax may apply when the participant is younger than 59½ unless an exception applies. Fidelity notes that an early withdrawal can also increase taxable income for the year in which the distribution occurs.

Because of these consequences, we should calculate the amount actually needed rather than automatically requesting the entire account balance.

Fidelity 401k Early Withdrawal

A Fidelity 401k early withdrawal generally means accessing retirement funds before age 59½. The rules can be complicated because eligibility for a distribution and exemption from the 10% additional tax are separate questions.

In general, an early distribution from a traditional 401(k) can be subject to ordinary income tax and the additional 10% tax unless an applicable exception is satisfied. Certain circumstances can qualify for exceptions, but meeting the requirements for one type of withdrawal does not automatically eliminate every tax obligation.

For example, federal rules provide certain exceptions involving circumstances such as separation from service after reaching the applicable age, qualifying medical expenses, and other situations established by tax law. Newer provisions under SECURE 2.0 also created additional exceptions for certain qualifying distributions. The specific requirements should be checked before a distribution is requested.

Fidelity 401k Hardship Withdrawal

A Fidelity 401k hardship withdrawal is designed for certain situations involving an immediate and heavy financial need. Importantly, a plan does not necessarily have to offer hardship distributions, so availability depends on the employer's plan.

Fidelity identifies several circumstances that may qualify under applicable hardship rules, including certain medical expenses, costs associated with purchasing a principal residence, expenses needed to prevent eviction or foreclosure, qualifying education expenses, funeral expenses, certain home-repair expenses, and qualifying losses connected with a federally declared disaster.

The amount that can be withdrawn is generally limited to what is necessary to satisfy the financial need, subject to applicable plan and tax rules. Some plans may also permit an amount sufficient to cover taxes resulting from the distribution.

Fidelity Investments Hardship Withdrawal Requirements

When we request a Fidelity Investments hardship withdrawal, the employer's plan may require us to provide information or documentation demonstrating the financial need. Some plans use procedures that allow participants to certify certain hardship circumstances without submitting the same level of documentation, while other plans may impose additional requirements.

It is important to remember that hardship eligibility and the 10% early-withdrawal tax exception are not the same thing. A participant can qualify for a hardship distribution and still owe the additional 10% tax if no separate exception applies. Hardship distributions are also generally subject to income taxation.

Fidelity 401k Loans and Withdrawals

Understanding the difference between Fidelity 401k loans and withdrawals can help us determine what type of transaction the plan permits.

A 401(k) loan is borrowed money that generally must be repaid to the retirement account. Fidelity explains that, under common federal limits, a participant may generally borrow up to the lesser of $50,000 or 50% of the vested account balance, subject to applicable rules and adjustments. Some circumstances can affect the calculation.

A loan generally must be repaid within five years, although a longer repayment period can apply to certain loans used to purchase a principal residence. The plan establishes the available loan terms, interest rate, fees, and repayment procedures.

The major difference is that a withdrawal permanently removes retirement savings, while a properly structured 401(k) loan is intended to put the borrowed amount back into the account through repayment.

What Happens If We Leave Our Job With a 401k Loan?

One important consideration with a Fidelity 401k loan is what happens after employment ends. Depending on the plan and circumstances, we may be required to repay the outstanding balance within a specified period.

If the loan is not repaid according to the applicable rules, the outstanding balance can potentially become a taxable distribution. If the participant is younger than 59½ and no exception applies, the 10% additional tax may also become relevant.

Therefore, we should understand the repayment requirements before taking a loan, particularly when employment could change.

Fidelity 401k Withdrawal Phone Number and Support

For questions about a specific Fidelity 401k withdrawal, we should use the contact information displayed within the Fidelity account or official Fidelity workplace-retirement support resources rather than relying on an unofficial phone number found elsewhere online.

The plan administrator or employer benefits department can also explain which withdrawal and loan provisions are included in the specific plan. This distinction matters because Fidelity cannot simply override restrictions contained in an employer's retirement plan.

Fidelity 401k Contribution Limit for 2026

The Fidelity 401k contribution limit is different from the amount we may be able to withdraw. For 2026, the employee contribution limit for a 401(k) is $24,500. Participants age 50 or older can generally make an additional $8,000 catch-up contribution, bringing the potential employee contribution to $32,500. For participants ages 60 through 63, the 2026 catch-up limit is $11,250, if the plan permits it, allowing total employee contributions of up to $35,750.

The combined employee and employer contribution limit for 2026 is generally $72,000, subject to applicable compensation and plan rules.

These contribution limits do not mean that every Fidelity 401(k) participant can automatically contribute the maximum amount. The employer's plan can impose additional provisions within the limits allowed by law.

Before Taking a Fidelity 401k Withdrawal

Before requesting a Fidelity withdrawal, we should review the full financial impact. A withdrawal can reduce the amount available for future retirement growth, while taxes and possible penalties can reduce the amount of cash actually received.

We should also consider whether an emergency fund, nonretirement savings, an eligible HSA distribution for qualified medical expenses, a personal loan, or another financial resource could meet the need without permanently reducing retirement savings. Fidelity specifically recommends considering alternatives before taking money from a workplace retirement account.

If a withdrawal is unavoidable, understanding the distribution type, tax treatment, withholding, and plan restrictions before submitting the request can help prevent unexpected consequences.

Final Thoughts

A Fidelity 401k withdrawal, Fidelity 401k hardship withdrawal, Fidelity 401k cash out, and Fidelity 401k loan are different ways of accessing or using retirement-plan assets, and each has different requirements and financial consequences. The most important starting point is the specific employer plan because Fidelity-administered plans can have different provisions.
