The demand for Yoga Mat is strongly correlated with the rise of yoga, fitness, mindfulness, at-home workouts and wellness lifestyles. Consumers are increasingly seeking yoga mats in accordance with such criteria as grip, thickness, material, durability, portability, comfort and eco-friendliness instead of merely seeking an ordinary exercise mat.

What Is Driving Demand for Yoga Mats?

The main demand driver is the participation in yoga and other physical activities. The reason for the purchase of yoga mat can be practicing yoga in studios, gyms, community centers or even at home, which means that a consumer needs personal equipment regardless of his or her preferred yoga studio.

Physical activity environment is also supporting this category. According to WHO, in 2022 31% of adults were not getting enough physical activity.

Why Do People Buy Yoga Mats?

A yoga mat provides a unique surface between the practitioner and the floor. This surface could have such properties as traction, cushioning and provide a more stable ground for standing, kneeling, sitting and laying positions.

What Are Consumers Looking for in a Yoga Mat?

The most popular product questions are about grip, thickness, material, size, weight, durability and cleaning of the mat.

What Materials Can Be Used to Manufacture Yoga Mats?

The following materials are commonly used to manufacture yoga mats: PVC, natural rubber, thermoplastic elastomers, and other synthetic or organic materials.

The material chosen for production impacts the performance parameters such as grip, flexibility, cushioning, weight, durability, cleaning, and end-of-life. Nowadays, consumers become more concerned not only about how a certain material behaves when practicing but also how it influences the longevity of products and the environment.

Therefore, manufacturers employ material science as one of the key elements of differentiation between products.

Are Non-Slip Yoga Mats Necessary?

Certainly. Traction is one of the key functions of a yoga mat.

When a yoga mat is stable enough and gives sufficient grip on the floor surface, it helps increase confidence in various poses. Still, the desired amount of grip depends on each individual needs and preferences.

Is Yoga Mat Thickness Important?

It is because there are different demands to cushioning and stability.

For example, a practitioner who has sensitive knees would probably like more cushioning, while somebody else, who performs balance poses, prefers thinner surface which gives more contact with the floor.
