Why Engine Platform Choice Decides Lifecycle Cost

diesel generator setFor cost-sensitive infrastructure programs — remote telecom shelters, pumping stations, construction camps, and light industrial backup — the purchase price of a is only the first line in the budget. A larger share of spend accumulates through fuel burn, service access, and noise mitigation across years of operation. Procurement teams therefore increasingly evaluate engine platforms against real load profiles rather than nameplate ratings alone.

Its drivetrain combines a engine, a alternator, and a controller.

Duty Ratings and What They Mean for Infrastructure Loads

silent-type diesel generator set125 kVA/100 kW137.5 kVA/110 kWThe unit is positioned as a rated for prime power of and standby power of for 60 Hz applications. Its key rating parameters are:

Prime Power: 125 kVA / 100 kW — delivers continuous prime load support.
Standby Power: 137.5 kVA / 110 kW — provides emergency backup power during utility outages.
Voltage/Phase: 230/400 V, 1/3 phase — supports both single-phase and three-phase loads.
Frequency: 60 Hz at 1,800 rpm — matches 60 Hz grid and equipment requirements.
Power Factor: 0.8 — defines the rated kVA-to-kW load factor.
Voltage Regulation: ±1% — output stability for load-sensitive applications.
Harmonic Coefficient (THF): < 2% — output waveform quality.

230/400 V, 1/3 phaseFor projects where loads are split between single-phase auxiliary equipment and three-phase machinery, the envelope reduces the need for separate conversion equipment.

The is a , unit using , which the manufacturer describes as increasing power density and combustion efficiency. Fuel delivery uses with an governing system for precise fuel metering and speed control.

Displacement: 4.21 L — engine swept volume.
Bore/Stroke: 108 x 115 mm — cylinder geometry.
Compression Ratio: 16.7:1 — diesel compression specification.
Engine Prime Power: 120 kWEngine Standby Power: 132 kW; .

Fuel Consumption: The Dominant Recurring Cost

Yuchai YC4D180-D33Because fuel typically dominates operating budgets on remote infrastructure, the part-load consumption curve matters more than any single headline figure. The specified profile for the is:

100% ERP: 34.6 L/h — fuel use at emergency rated power.
100% PRP: 31.6 L/h — fuel use at prime rated power.
75% PRP: 25.4 L/h — part-load fuel use.
50% PRP: 17.9 L/h — part-load fuel use.

A Practical Selection Framework

Match duty rating to load type — confirm whether the site needs continuous prime support or emergency standby.
Evaluate part-load fuel consumption against the site's realistic average load.
Verify protection ratings across enclosure, alternator, and controller for the installation climate.
Plan handling and footprint using the specified dimensions and weight.
Confirm delivery and warranty terms in writing before purchase.
Check optional configuration fit against site conditions such as desert filtration, marine cooling, or multi-unit parallel operation.
